chain soft links

ok im a bornagain biker split links are gone so went to buy a chain n sprockets for my bike all done and fine but when i came to fit the soft link the loose plate wont push on the pins any ideas

Molegrips & a nut thats a bit larger than the pin.

get the idea but surely it would make it a tight spot on the chain even before it was used ????

No, as the outer plates should not rotate on the pins.

Deviating slightly, why did split links go out? both my chains have them and I cant see there being any problem if they are put on the right way.

A chain is as weak as its weakest link, but mainly people are getting paranoid.

You still can get split links, and many people still use them. However it is very rare for them to be part of a chain kit for anything larger than a 520 chain.

People have more reason to be paranoid when they're putting over 150hp through their chains from a standard bike .

Except if you look at the chain there is the same side plates taking the strain as there is with a soft link.

I know that there are plenty of people drag racing with very powerful engines who use split links.

I think the issue comes from the clip coming off somehow. Then it's easy for a plate to start to come off and it all goes wrong.

I've seen this before, don't know how / why it happens though.

If put on correctly (and the right clip for the make of chain) there is no real reason for the clip to come off.

At least you can easily find the clip to check it, unlike a rivit link where you are just left praying that you used enough force to peen over the ends.
