Old W reg (1981?) has 30k on the clock, mot'd till May, and I got an insurance quote of £71 tpo for missus and me.

Chap hardly ever rides it, to the MOT station once a year I think.

Haven't actually seen it, not lately, saw him on it once four years back and mentioned I might be interested in buying it if he ever sold it, as the wife had just passed her CBT then, she has a full bike licence now.

He spoke to me on the phone Sunday and said he wanted £300 for it. Confused

Does anyone know for sure how tall the saddle is on these models? Though I assume that old it would have through wear and tear settled down 1/2 inch on the saddle?

Back in the day, I knew a short arse girl who used one as a courier bike, if she could get on it, I'm sure most people could.

A friend who is 5'2" was having trouble with the height of hers.
But she's a bit stupid like that - pointed out that short people DO have to shift their body around a bit and that it was the same for me on my KTM with higher seat (I actually have shortish legs as it goes too).
It's not a light bike for the fairly paltry amount of power it makes.

Yeah they are quite heavy for what they are but in good shape they are nice and easy to ride. Seat height isn't high at all, 300 quid is a steal if it's a good runner.

I nearly bought a 250 dream, when I was 15, to do up for when I did my test. It was a barn find, didn't run and was grotty as anything. He wanted £200 for that, so as long as it's not too bad could be a good find.

I can measure the height from the floor and seat width of mine tomorrow if it helps.

It does what it looks like it should do, 60mph, good mpg and no fun.

Watch for the "death rattle".

The automatic cam chain tensioner on those had a weedy spring when it was new 33 years ago, I doubt it's got any stronger.

Take the rocker cover off, loosen the CCT adjuster nut (back of the head between the carbs), push down hard on top of the CCT blade with a big screwdriver then tighten up again while still pushing down. You should hear the cam chain whirring, not clattering as the engine runs. Don't overtighten the rocker cover bolts when you put it back on, they'll snap.

Hi

They are fairly heavy bikes and not that low. But at £300 grab it as some people now seem to regard them as classics.

All the best

Out of interest, what sort of top speed did you get out of your pyro?

I'm told the one my friend has feels particularly lethargic - worse than her YBR. I rode it very briefly before and I didn't think it was QUITE as bad as that, but not as good as I expected.
Two up it's apparantly definitely worse.
Could just be that's it's higher geared and they're not revving it out or something.

(Funnily enough, I did suggest she was an idiot and should have gone for a CB250RS before she got it Smile ).

Hi

They managed about 85mph true top speed as standard. However my 400 one only ever managed 96mph, but strangely was doing 105mph according to a friends GS550 at that time. The speedo seemed to read low compared to just about everything else.

All the best

Keith

Cheers. I was planning to take a GPS along anyway.

But then she was supposed to bring it down earlier today (yesterday) and haven't heard about it and quite busy from now on, so may not have time anyway.

I saw 70 on the clock when I owned it and it was comfortable at that.

They definitely aren't fast though, when I was couriering them, the only way to really get them going was to rev them until they smoked, then change gear Twisted Evil

@Keith, I did think the 400 was meant to be good for over a ton, but maybe only just over.

I bought 5 for £50 a few years back made 3 good ones and one functional one, did a trip to newquay/lands end on em.

Slow, not great on fuel, heavy, uninspiring, reliable, well built, smooth.

Stator plate's are all dying now and are rare as rocking horse poo, symptoms can be starting up on 1 til warm the runs on 2, feels restricted revs slowly or just misfires all over the place.

Seat bases are also prone to rot as is the tank on the lower corners. Also the stupid circlip that holds the sprocket and carrier on wears through the wheel so new wheel needed if play in sprocket.

From memory the true top speed was meant to be 105mph (give or take 1mph), and I always wondered why this one wouldn't crack a ton. Until I found out how quickly the friends GS550 was going at the same speed Laughing

All the best

I'm pretty sure I got over 100mph on mine (on an Autobahn of course, officer) even though it was hampered by a Rickman GRP full fairing.

I'd say 'no'...

Even, back in the day, I don't think there was a point to the Superdream.

Just my humble opinion.

Where does all this leave the XS250/400, GSX250/400 and Z250/400-440 wannabe Superdreams though?

With the exhausts blowing where they are, it's down on power noticeably from when I first rode it, but it's still managing about 60 fairly comfortably, seen about 72 on the clocks but it was wheezing, and getting 55mpg with me ragging it everywhere.

It's not a terrible little thing. Shaft left this one outside for 18 months, and I've done nothing apart from get a new battery and off it went. I reckon if I cleaned the carbs out properly, and bandaged the exhaust it would be a fine little commuter.
