ORLY

In japan you can only done for speeding if the camera gets a pic of the drivers face.

Using that simple tech, you can put that pic through facial recognition and BAM!

The tinfoil hat wearer part of me reckons more advanced tech is already being used.

Given the rules governing passport photos, ie, can't smile, no sunglasses, no hair partially covering face, etc, I'd like to know how good FR is.

If it's that good why all the restrictions on passport photos?

It would have to be accurate enough to detect partial facial features. I can't see it being able to identify an individual using just their eyes (if wearing a skid lid) or mouth/chin if the sun visor is down in the car. What about light reflecting off the windscreen or wearing a tinted visor? And we've all seen the resolution of those videos/photos they send out.

1. Computerised facial recognition is ropey at best under ideal conditions.
2. The CPS and other bean counters won't give a stuff about whether they're prosecuting the right person or not, because a conviction is a conviction.
3. Refusing to incriminate a driver hands them an easy 6 pointer.

Simple tech - as in jap dvla worker compares scamera photo to registered keeper's licence photo. Yep, pretty simple. Also, Japanese, facial recognition... Laughing
