i'm selling my rocket , its advertised here & on gumtree .

so far 2 people have said they want to communicate by email & pay by paypal as they don't have online baking . both i'm sure are con men .

just there someone else emailed me from france asking for more pictures & asking if i can send the bike to france .

i had a look at the prices of rockets & i think mine is about the cheapest in Britain , surely it would be cheaper to buy a rocket in france & avoid shipping costs ?

It may be a scam, as if they send the money via paypal they can claim for the money back and say they never received the bike. Paypal will always side with the buyer.

If they can't use online banking they can still go into there local bank and send money to you that way or use a company such as western union.

Also, who buys a bike without looking at it first? Sounds a tad fishy to me.

if someone wants to transfer money is it really a good idea to give a stranger your sort code & account number ?

I'd be a bit sketchy about giving out my card details to a stranger, especially if they haven't come to view the bike or arranged some sort of collection.

Although I can't imagine they could do much with just your sort code and account number. It's the long card number and your security code that is used to buy items.

I've sold to people blind (cheap 125's though). They can't do much with your acc # and sort code. I just insist it's a transfer and cash cleared to my account before the bike goes anywhere. Paypal would be insane they could dispute it and have the cash back within an hour of taking your ride. Also cheques to your account can be cancelled within a certain time period so only take transfers.

If people say they can't use online banking but manage to use gumtree and can organise the transport of a bike I'd suggest they are full of shit and scammers.

The Paypal buyers will be scammers with stolen PayPal accounts, the money will get refunded to the account owner and you'll have no bike and no money.

People wanting to buy your bike unseen and paying with bank transfer will be scammers with stolen online banking login details.

Fuck sending it abroad, cash on collection is good and where they take the bike is then nothing to do with you.

Cash is king.

Send em a picture of my nads, do only cash on collection. There's no way that they only have paypal and no bank services. You need a bank account to enable paypal and it is online banking!

My worry is that you have had to ask the question. Please be careful!

Yes you need at least access to a debit/credit card to use paypal but you can make a payment to users without an actual paypal account by just making a single payment and not bothering to register. I will however add that it may only be possible to make payments to business sellers in this way.

Either way, the OP's situation is a tad sticky to me. No chance without the queens heads looking up at me from my palm for me.

£9K bikes and Gumtree buyers don't really go together. I'd get that on AutoTrader and eBay (as a classified!)

You'll be left with no bike and no money.

The payment will be reversed by the bank when the account owner discovers the missing money.

Next the 'buyer' will be sending you more than the agreed price and wanting you to send them the difference by Western Union or some shit like that.

You should only accept cash on collection.

If it feels wrong, it normally is wrong.

That feels like a massive scam. I'd avoid.

As Ste said, I think cash on collection is best really. It's the safest way and your guaranteed the money. Unlike with all this online transfer malarky, it's not worth the risk mate, especially if it's a £9k bike.

You also said your bike is the cheapest Rocket in Britain, maybe it's worth getting a dealer to value your bike, they may give u a reasonable amount.

I got offered £900 for my bandit yesterday and I only paid £925 (admittedly £985 for it on the road) and it needs a new set of tyres now as well.

my local triumph dealer said someone would be getting a bargain at 9k .

if i mind right theres quite a few for 10k or a bit more on autotrader yet 2 dealers offered me 7.5k , do they really need to make up to 2.5k profit on my bike plus about 1k profit of the bike i buy !

Not saying whether this is a con or not, hard to say without seeing all the details

However last year I sold my rvf for 2.5k, guy paid via bank transfer without seeing the bike and he sent a courier to collect. So its not unheard of

Oh and not sure if it was answered but

I direct bank transfer to your account is irreversible. So he couldn't get the money back once it's in your account

And bank transfers are reversible by the bank who sent the transfer.

For you or me, not for the bank.

Scammer deposits a fake cheque (but drawn on a real account) into their scam account.
The bank credits the cheque and the funds become available.
Scammer makes a transfer.
The owner of the account that the fake cheque was drawn on notices it weeks later, says "Oi, what's that?" and it all unravels.
The fraudulent cheque is "uncredited", the bank reverses the transfer because the money was never there, the recipient bank colludes, and OP is left up merde creek sans le paddle. Even if the money is taken out of the account, "you owe us £9K because someone else made an error."

It's unlikely, but the bigger the amount the more I'd be concerned about it.
