I dont know if anyone has posted this before but i found out this today...........
Seems it was a nice day today i thought i would take the gsxr 1000 out for a blast, only problem being that the tax ran out at the begining of the month and i had sorned it.
So not wanting to miss out on the lovely weather and being a law abidding citizen i went online and searched on bing for motorcycle road tax or something like that, up pops this page that looks just like the Dot Gov or DVLA website and i start puttting in my details.
Ive only ever taxed online once before a long while ago and thought it was a little unfamiliar, but, carried on filling in the form, i get to where you check the cost of the tax and thought £82 that looks expensive for six months worth as being a tight b'stard i wasnt paying for a full year! i started to check it out then i found this service charge of £40!! Seems a bit much when the real DVLA website is only £2.50
Anyway here is the link
https://taxdisc-direct.co.uk/prices.php
I never knew that anyone would be allowed to do this!
So just a warning to check everything before you buy anything online! as were theres money theres always some robbing scamming b'stard that wants some of it!!!

It's a cromulent caution. When you're in a hurry, sites like that which pay for top Google ranking while shamelessly aping the gross appearance of the legit site can catch you out.

The copying of the style of the DVLA site is underhand. But the warnings and service charges are clear enough. I could have sympathy if someone in old age got fooled, but the average person? Nope.

No offence but how the fug did you find that site?

I googled buy road tax and the correct site is at the top.

Those assholes do enough to stay on the right side of the law by saying they're not the real DVLA, but the resemblence to the .gov site says they're still a bunch of parasitical c*nts ready to feed on the the unwary, inexperienced and trusting.
They do it with passports as well, possibly other things and do nothing you couldn't easily do for yourself.

Did you also miss the bit about you shouldn't use the vehicle without showing a tax disc unless you did it online before the old one expired?

It's shocking, the amount of people that are dim enough to fall for these blatant rip off sites.

Agreed, you'd have to be seriously dim to fall for these sites, alas there are many people that dim (and dimmer) who do. :/

Not a dig at anybody but what's the advantages of sites like this? Why not just do it on the DVLA site? Or is a mistake as they look reasonably similar?

It's an intentionally lying website set up so that people in a rush (or just retarded, like OP Very Happy ) go through the website and end up paying more than they should because of the middle man.

Simple business setup: you make a website like this, set up the payments etc, then just leave it. Only thing you have to do is send off for the stuff on behalf of them and make a load of cash on the side.

DVLA could probably do them under the Trades Description Act for that rip-off. I remember years ago Harrods took a market stall called 'Arrods' to court on the grounds that they were trying to benefit from the Harrods name. Harrods won. The name or style of a logo only has to give the impression that it relates to another (presumably high profile success) business to be illegal.

But why would the DVLA care. They still get their fee.

I really think that there should be some law about them though. There are people who aren't internet savvy (or just plain dim). Let be honest, it's legal scamming.

That's why I said "could". And I agree it is legalized scamming, but until DVLA take action it will stay legal.
