Ignition coil resistances *FIXED*

Me bike has broke. No spark and a long way from home. I am suspicious of the ignition coil. Anyone know what the ignition coil winding resistances should be for a yamaha XTZ660?

That doesn't seem too far out. No specs for the XTZ660, but the secondary resistance does seem a bit high.

2 - 3 ohms primary, 30 - 40 kohms secondary on mine so they don't seem a million miles out.

Turned out it wasn't the coil but instead a wire going to the CDI which has at some point been cut, soldered together then wrapped in masking tape...NOT PVC tape, the paper stuff.

It had corroded to buggery and taken the spade terminal in the connector block with it. The bike is now running thanks to some horrendous bodgery on my part which included taking a set of snips to the CDI connector block to allow me to put a 99p halfords pick 'n mix connector on the new bit of wire I spliced on. At least I had the decency to feel guilty as I was doing it:roll:

What really annoys me is that having taken five hours to find the fault, there are only two people who have been anywhere near that part of the bike. Myself and Alvins Moto-Cal, Seafield Road, Edinburgh who are MZ main dealers for Scotland. Now I am certain it was not me who snipped through the middle of a wire in the loom then bodge repaired it in a fashion that was bound to fail in time, so that leaves Alvins Moto-Cal, Seafield Road, Edinburgh as the culprits since I am also pretty certain it didn't leave the factory like that.

I have noticed several other bits of PVC tape about the place that were not put there by me. This will warrant a good going over with my big-box o' terminals, soldering iron and shrinktube when I get home. Bearing in mind this is a two year old bike, the loom is beginning to resemble a 15 year old CG125

They did not endear themselves to me by taking four months to fix my bike under warranty when the engine let-go. I will refrain from saying anything that could be considered liableous.

Myself and my bikes will not be going there again.
