Watching Top Gear yesterday got me thinking, that i'd enjoy watching something similar to Top Gear but with motorcycles instead of cars.

Are there any programmes that exist that are like Top Gear (reviews & adventures with a hint of comedy/half decent presenters) but with motorbikes that can be watched online?

The Motorbike Show is on ITV4 on Saturdays.

It's a repeat and half way through the series though.

There's The Motorbike Show on ITV 4 with Henry Cole. It seems to get repeated fairly often. Not exactly the same sort of thing, but then it's not exactly the same sort of audience!

Steve.

I found an american programme called 'Twist the throttle' which is on various low rent cable channels from time to time. It's not critical of any bike exactly but they go to various factories and ride various bikes. They do overuse the phrase 'twist the throttle' but it's not a bad watch really.

Brick Wall - yet again - Top Gear is a entertainment comedy show that happens to use some vehicular props.

It's not particularly "about cars".

We had here a one comedy show about motorcycles called ,,I like bike''. Well, it will be no use for foreigners since the language barrier, anyway. Thumbs Up

These shows never last too long, most of the people just want to see cars or detective crap on tv rather than motorcycles.

It wouldn't be that hard to make one. Afterall Top Gear only runs for 6-8 hours a series. I'd go for a 40-45 minute show as that allows you to sell it to networks that run ads.

There are loads of topics and tests that could be covered too. From small capacity touring (a bit like the TG vietnam special), amature racing series, commuters, classics, adventure and off-road riding, and plenty of challenges.

The way I see it, is that there are two problems.

1) Funding. there's only 1 million active riders (from around 4m licence holders), that means it would probably stuggle to get even 100,000 viewers unless it was on at prime time (like TG is). Lack of viewers means lack of funds. The show would cost a lot (at least with the things I'd have planned). I actually think veiwing figures would be higher if it were a Youtube channel as oppose to something on terestrial TV.

2) Talent. The thing that makes TG is the talent. Compare it to 5th Gear, which certainly isn't the worst show out there, and see how talent makes a difference. Getting my big generalisation brush out now, but I wouldn't want to see the kind of overweight, hairy, common sounding bikers I see hanging around cafes and bike parts. someone like Steve Paraish doing it would be about the worst thing ever. I could imagine Cal being a great candiate for show in 15 years time. Though there are probably plenty of current presenters like May, Hammond, Boorman, etc.. that ride bikes. Convincing them to do a show would be another thing.

I certainly wouldn't want to see any of those MCN presenters. A packet of weetabix has more character and charisma. This seems to be a UK thing. Check out MCN or over UK Mags youtube videos and compare them with Aussie, US or Candian video just to see how bad it is. Not just the presenters but the whole production.

We could always do a BCF kickstater and get some cash together for a pilot. Probably looking at £50,000 - £100,000 depending on who gets paid.

Bike world can be okay. Its not Top Gear for bikes by any means but it can be a good time filler to watch some weeks.

Worlds Greatest Motorcycle Rides wasn't too bad from the episodes i've seen too. Not sure if/where you can watch it now days though - doesn't seem to be on Torrents.

Certainly agree the UK bike based stuff is more boring than the American, or Aussie stuff. However I don't think the production values are imperative. If the content is good, then you'll still attract people. Then when you build that fan base you can invest in higher production values.

Job done, invest in me! I know one end of the bike from another (just).

Sort of related but I quite like Jay Leno's Garage on youtube, half bikes, half cars.
That and "Cafe Racer"

8pm weekdays on the Travel Channel (405 on Freesat, other digital TV services are available). It's been on constant repeat cycles for the last couple of months at least. It's nice easy watching.

Am glad you don't do my shopping. Could shoot a 30 minute promo for £7.5k if written intelligently and frugally. £10k max for a low budget shoot. The tricky part is great writing, awesome talent and good organisation.

So as the instigator, how much do you want to put in?

Thats the problem with Henry Coles show. Its ok but you can tell hes a bit of a one man band, if he had some talant doing the script and producing it instead of doing it all himself it could be alot better.

As there isnt really one, what would be the best content and way to do it as to appeal ?

What kind of bikes, remember you have to keep all style of bikes and their owners in mind.

This. Never seen a more competent bunch of riding goofs in my life and they love doing unusual specials like racing an R1 on the ice against a Subaru or something. Shame about the French Laughing
