This thread sparked from what my brother was just quoted and I will be in the same situation in less than 2 years. He has 2 years NCB and has been riding for a little over 2 years. The bikes are the 1000cc sports bikes like Fireblades, Ninjas etc. Even the 600 versions are still high (2 grand for a CBR600RR, etc). We're in North West London.

He's 22, I'm 20.

By the way, this is with low mileage p/a and social use only. Forgot to change it back from that to higher mileage and commuting as well with the litre bikes.

Oh right, so you are in the "most likely to have a crash" age bracket then.

Have you tried moving out to the country, and buying a shitty 20 year old commuter?

That should lower the premiums. Thumbs Up

a 2013 cbr600rr new goes for just shy of 10 grand.

you bitch about 2 grand insurance on a 10 grand bike?

surely if you can afford 10k on a bike you can afford to split 2k insurance payments over the year....

A 22 year old on a litre sport bike, in London?

And you're wondering why insurance cost is so high... Laughing

Seriously high risk for insurers, chances are if you don't crash it'll get nicked. They go on a risk rating, with things like young riders, high risk area for thefts, desirable bike etc etc increasing the price. You will tick (nearly) every box hence the ludicrous prices.

If I tell them it's painted bright pink and luminous green will it help with the theft part? Laughing

We weren't expecting a few hundred, of course, around £1,500-£2,000 (on a litre brand new not a 600) but over 6 grand is insane that's over half the fucking bike itself. I must go and see what a 1199 or HP4 would cost me.

(Obviously I would not paint it pink and green and when they start a search for a pink and green Fireblade, etc I would just tell them they probably re-painted it back to the normal colour Shocked)

The quotes you get that are stupidly priced are because that company doesnt want your business, but they still want to appear on the compare sites.

Sounds to me like they're quoting high because they don't really want your business. On the other hand if you're stupid enough to pay it, they'll take you on.

my way around this would be to look for something like a 999 which to some insurance companies is regarded as a classic and can be insured as such.

Either that or a YBR 125.

Or go for TPFT and a 600 but still pay a silly price.

Half the value of the bike, probably 50% chance (in the insurers eyes) of you claiming for theft or a write off and therefore them having to pay out 12 grand.. I'd say that's probably about right Wink

Reduce some of the risk - so either a less expensive bike, a less desirable bike, move out of London, wait until you're older (25+), or any combination of the above.

Have you checked your postcode to see what risk level it is? Could be you're in the very highest risk area which means no insurance is ever going to be cheap. https://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-ratings.php

Yeah I am in one of them. Had this same problem when they wanted a grand for a YBR. Thumbs Down

Btw, for license held length do I put 0 years ('A' license only) or 2 years (including A2 license). Surely if I put more than 0 they would be like what is going on that's impossible you liar.

Use the date that's printed on your licence

Depends on who's asking and exactly what they ask.

If the insurer distinguishes between different categories (A1, A2, A) then 0 years.

If they only distinguish between provisional and "full" and 0 vs 2 years makes a significant difference to the premium, then I'd go with 2, but be prepared to argue the toss up to and beyond the ombudsman.

Agree not to take a pillion, try increasing the mileage, try it with and without security (my quote went up by 1/3rd with an Almax and Squire listed).

And do you really need a new litre bike? Planning a lot of track racing? Because I doubt you'll experience any significant difference on a UK public road with a ten year old example.

Hmm '14 CBR600RR @ £9,799 is £1,560. '09 @ £5,499 is £1,025. (TPFT)

I did others and they dropped quite a bit more.

Sounds like you and your brother need to do some shopping around.

Are your bikes going to be parked on the road?

What's your post code rating ?

I'm in D so pretty bad, but not the worst. I'm 20, k5 gsxr 600 is just under £300 FC with commuting. And I live directly in a city centre too.

06 fire blade is just over £300.

Shop around more ? Should be able to get it cheaper than a grand. Are you adding any other riders on your policy ? If yiu are. Don't.

Also not clicking the pillion passengers button can make a huge difference from what I've found

I got quoted £540 Comp with commuting (£1k excess) for the CBR600RR i'm going to buy as soon as I pass.

This is based on the following..

age 31
Full licence
2 years ncb
commute 6000 miles a year
live in north london
bike kept on the street overnight
disc lock and chain but no alarm
