Alternative to software raid 1

I've got a 2tb disk with all my data on and I've just bought another with the intention of using the Windows mirror service to setup a software raid - except that I've just found out that it's not a feature of Windows 7 home premium, only pro.

So, other than using a backup/synchronise program and scheduling it are there any other alternatives?

Download and install win 7 pro

Or check to see if your motherboard has built in raid.

It is a home office PC.

I don't really want to go pirate this time (although I'm not quite sure why). I wanted to stick to software as well.

Software raid is good, to a point.... but if the o/s bombs out will it not take the raid with it?

I can supply all the stuff you need to own a parrot and an eye patch.

Win 7 mirror doesn't, it breaks the link but keeps the data intact on both disks and it means that you can chuck either disk into any Windows machine and get straight at your data.

I use allway sync (paid for version) to sync my drives in my server, and to cloud (hate that term) providers.

Set up a script and schedule it then you can forget all about it.

raid 1 is almost pointless on anything other than a server where data integrity is the most important aspect.

the problem with having the drive in the same machine is, if the PSU decide to go bang and take everything else in the system with it, you are just as screwed as you were before.

if it was me i would use the drive to either set up a home office server that backups data automatically at a given time, or chuck it in a nas to do the same thing. the upside to this is, if youe machine does go wrong, plug another machine into the network, put in passwords and keep using the data, or even have access to the data on another part of the network when the machine is still OK (do this all the time for project files and music)

all important data should still be backed up off-site too, but that should be agiven really
