Hi all. I passed my Mod 1 today! Looking at what bike I'm gonna get for when I pass Mod 2.

I was looking at the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and the ER6-F 2014 and this is what I gathered from them both. Bare in mind I'm gonna have to get it restricted for 2 years as I'm under 24.

Ninja 300

Cheaper by almost £1000
Comes in white (I'm really not too keen on the orange and green)
Looks like a better riding position from what I've seen in the videos

ER6-F 2014

More power
Higher top speed (Although it will be restricted for a long time so not sure this really matters)
Can be unrestricted after 2 years so I won't have to buy a new bike if I want to

I'm fairly new to bikes so I'm just looking for some advice on the matter!

Oh another thing. I turn 24 in November so I could re-take and get the full A so I don't necessarily have to wait for 2 years Smile.

Haven't ridden either but have ridden an ER6N which is the same as the 6f minus the fairings. Boring, bland and after a few hours seriously uncomfortable.

For this reason I would save £1k and get the Ninja

Scratch that I'd get neither. It's a first big bike get a cheap bandit/cb500/er5 make all your mistakes on it, abuse it, treat it like a cheap whore. Then get your full A in November and spend the cash saved on something you want without giving a toss about restriction/power.

Exactly that. Thumbs Up

You won't know what you really want until you've put a few miles on moderate sized bikes. You may find that you want bigger, smaller, more leany, more sit-uppy, more power, more torque. Paying the initial depreciation on a bike to find out what you don't like about it is mental - not much offence intended.

On an A2 you can't get the usual circa 2000 suspects: post-2004 Fazer, Hornet, CBR600F, Thundercat.

So I'd agree with the aforementioned Bandit, or an SV650S if you want something more leany-forwards. Perhaps a GPZ500S, bearing in mind that you'll be at 35kW or thereabouts either way if you're staying legal.

Get a cheap Fazer - plenty of bargains on the bay and way better than the ER6 in every way.

The Fazer claims over 70kW and so is not suitable for restricting to 35kW for an A2 license. You might get lucky, but that would apply to any bike.

Actually, motorcycle specs lists the 1998-2004 FZS600 at 69.3kW. It's the post 2004 FZ-6 that's 72kW+ Thinking

Ah, go on then, I shall allow it. Very Happy

ER6F.

But don't get a brand new bike now. Just wait it out on an older bike and get a brand new/newer/newish bike when you get teh 'A' license.

Uber Fazer bargain here on the Fazer Forum. 2002 model, so unfortunately the smaller tank and pants headlights. However this one is in super nice nick and has done almost no miles and only £1.5k.

Either way, a great bike to cut your teeth on.

Another vote for getting something cheaper now and saving your money for when you've got your full license.

Mine is white... They change the colours every year.

Also got it £2000 less than new with 130 miles on the clock.

I would agree on getting the more powerful option, then having it restricted, I passed on the old rules when I was 19 and had a "Ninja 250" which was alright because you learn to handle the bike better and safer in order to keep up. I was pretty quickly ready for some more power, when I eventually got my ZX6R after 2 years (2 years ago) it is a totally different beast, it has 3x the power but that doesn't do justice to the difference.

The added power coupled with riding an unfamiliar bike took a small amount of getting used to, don't get me wrong it was only a week or so but those first couple of rides were an eye opener. I think if you were already used to whatever bike, then de-restrict it wouldn't feel quite so alien!

Regarding getting used vs new, it's your money so it's your choice - I don't really have an opinion on that! But "nearly new" is where I'd go! One point to note is slightly older bikes do hold their value well so if you got something 5/6 years old you could sell it in 2 years time for probably about what you paid for it!
