The person riding it.

Seen some " poofy " bikes being ridden to the limits of adhesion .

Exactly this. There is no exact science to it... it all depends on what you want out of a bike. I dare say for anyone that wants to go fast all the time, anything with a parallel twin engine will seem dull. Etc.

For example, G only tends to rate bikes that he has owned himself such as ZX6R J1/2, TRX850, GSXR-1000 K2+, R6 & anything KTM 2 stroke. Laughing Anything else is rubbish or not worth the money.

For me, it's a power delivery that's flat, neutral handling which doesn't turn THAT sharply, sloppy brakes and so on. A bike that doesn't make you WANT to open the throttle that bit more, turn that bit quicker, further over, brake later and so on.

When there's a conflict between what you want and what the bike is capable of providing, it may be frustrating, dangerous or boring, depending on how bad the conflict is.

If you want speed and acceleration, most low power bikes will be boring. If you want an engaging ride, most non-peaky engines will be boring. If you want to have fun on bends, something with very little ground clearance like a cruiser or most scooters will be boring - or if the suspension isn't good enough and you're still pushing, dangerous. If you want to pop power wheelies everywhere, something with a low centre of gravity and / or long gears will be boring.

A more enlightened view might be to treat each bike differently, depending on what it's good at, and play to the bike's strengths. It's possible to have fun on almost anything with two wheels, if you try.

Power delivery and noise.

That's why most people find 2 strokes mental because all of a sudden it just kicks off Laughing

Being in the outside lane of the M4 without working indicators and realising it wasn't that you had slipped on something the last time you leant the bike, but that there was no pressure in the back tyre at all certainly wasn't "boring"!
Waiting for recovery, more so, to be fair.

Bike that has given me most 'fun' like, well, ever, has just one cylinder, barely ten horsepower, wire wheels, drum brakes and a top speed of barely 60mph.

I have owned it since 1986.... so its had plenty of chance to deliver thrills, but bless the little bugger, its never stopped delivering them.

It is a dedicated competition trials bike... which explains much and does and a new level of dynamism to shatter the allusions I used to decry its sporting prowess, but still.

That persuit is all about riding to, and beyond the limits of adhesion provided by slimy moss covered rocks, gravel, mud and marsh, often on inclines mountain goats would think twice to tackle. Not going quick. so bike suits the purpose perfectly, and the 'joy' is in the satisfaction of getting from one end of a section to the other, at all... not how quick you do it, or how quick you do it compared to the next chap.

I found track riding far less engaging after that. Going round and round in circles rather quickly, delivered a certain excitement, briefly... curiously mostly before straddling the bike.... once there it was a relatively simple matter of twisting the throttle till it got a bit squiffy, then doing the same thing over and over 15 times or so till some-one told you to stop! The experience rather jaded by realisation that quite often first bike over the line wasn't ridden by the most skillful rider, or even one with biggest balls, but the one simply with most money to chuck at the thing. Leading to rather large degree of dissolusion, when I realised that actually, faster i went, less riding time I got for the rather exorbitant amount of money it all cost!

On the Road? Well... going quick on a track didn't really get me; notion of trying to emulate that on public roads, where measure of success is... err... well there isn't one, really is there? Well, I suppose you could try adding up speeding fines..... doesn't really pose much of a 'challenge', therfore hold huge interest.

Interest on the road, for me at least, has been like trials riding facing all the varied hazards and challenges presented by the road, and getting from A to B and back again, in once piece... an extremely long trials section! Making good progress along the way.

Interest then comes from going further, and exploring new roads, new routes, going different places, seeing different things; rather than riding same stretch of road, like a track over and over again.

Which leads you into the world of touring... and following that, to bigger and bigger ever more capable, ever more capable bikes, that could culminate in a Pan or a Wing... which I have to say, even to me I find a little boring... simply as they are so 'refined' and designed to make the job they are intended for fuss and hassle free and comfortable.... there's no little challenge, little engagement.

I have about £400s worth (when I bought it) system hard luggage from my VF-Thou. Had the notion to fit it to the CB750 when I got that as a stop gap... BUT... going back to soft-luggage and improvisation, demanding some thought, care and attension to loading the bike up for the week-end... not simply packing a suit case in the bedroom and then clicking it onto its rail on the bike... I actually re-discovered some of the fun and interest, and 'engagement' in the persuit, it demanding more effort from me, again.

It is at the end of the day, what you make of it; but, looking at the hard-ware; whether it be the bike, some performance enhancing goodie for it or some wonder accessory, to make it 'better' is rather introspective; its draws attention into a very narrow field of view, and places importance on stuff that really is only a tiny part of the whole deal.

There are wider horizons out there, a whole world to explore; so many challenges to tackle, and find the fun in, and less drool-worthy or inspiring the kit is to begin with, more oportunity they have to pose challenges and offer engagement and 'fun'.

Been playing a computer game recently, O/H & Daughter got all obsessed with since Christmas. Last week, I went to get a new pair of tyres for the bike; taking loose wheels out the boot of the car, and buggered to carry them, decided to roll it to the fitting bay... Made me grin and think of those Victorian children playing with hoops and sticks and having SO much fun, compared to modern kids, given more computing power than took to put a man on the moon, to make them miserable, 'cos they cant get past level 8!

Its all in the rider, all in the attitude and all in the 'spirit' of doing, not the possession of technology.

I can have fun on pretty much any bike apart from an automatic scooter or any of the Honda Cub series, but maybe I'm weird.

not buying what you want

"I wanted an R6, but bought a _____ instead as, I've only just passed my test / I am a poof / girl / wanted some practise"

and now you're bored, less than 6 months later you still want your dream, but have to live with the reality

life is too short people

I don't remember any bike I've ever owned as being boring. Even had fun on my CB100. But even with that I was always hacking about with mates, so I guess it's what you do with it that keeps it fun.

I mean like the Bandit for example is considered by most on here as boring. That said it may just be because they've ridden more powerful bikes.

I don't like really quiet bikes - even though I have a couple. If you can't make a bit of a racket with some eager induction sound, or overrun fireworks, a vital part of the experience that makes bikes involving dissipates. Doesn't have to be fast, doesn't have to be big - but without the noise a bike feels barely alive to me.

Yes, but you've come to the Bandit from a 125, so I doubt you'll find it boring for a while anyway. And if you go interesting places, ride with mates, ride good roads and routes, keep it varied, you could enjoy it for many years before getting tired of it.

true, it also legally has to be restricted so if it's restricted to 46 it'll still feel powerful compared to the 125 and I can just derestrict it when I want more power.

In fairness as long as it will out perform most standard cars not overly bothered by it's speed but would like it to accelerate quickly to be overtake cars.

They keep telling me my CB500 is boring, but I don't see it. To me 0-60 in 5 seconds and good handling isn't boring, and often I give it some and think "Fuck me, that was quick"... it's more than enough to get the adrenalin going.

Some people will laugh at that I know, but it's true.

And because it doesn't have fairings or screen, it feels like you're going faster than you are; it feels good to me. If you have experience riding supersports then of course it will be relatively boring but I made a decision not to test ride anything more powerful than my CB until I am in a position and have the desire to buy it.

I may be jumping to a 1000 in a couple of months and it will be interesting what I think of my CB500 then, but 2 years of fond memories so far. Smile

Oh and yes; my favourite bikes for 'fun' are all under 250cc.
Only one had over 48hp and I actually found it more fun when it had an issue and had 37.5hp.
I'd still consider a bandit boring. Probably even more so a restricted one.
