Hi,
I'm planning a long weekend riding to and from Germany. It's about 650 miles round trip out of the UK.
The snag is I'm struggling to get breakdown cover for the weekend, due to the age of the bike. (G reg'd.)
Would it be covered if I had a annual policy? If I take the 1198 it'll only cost me £20 for the four days I'm abroad, but don't really relish doing over 1200 miles on it on straight boring roads. I'd obviously prefer to take the scenic route but time constraints say no!

Thanks all!

(Ps who's going to be the first with the 'take the sports bike and man up' comment then?!?)

ADAC is something like £70 for a year's Europe-wide policy that should cover anything you're in control of from a bike to a 7.5t motorhome.

May be worth listing your newer bike as the main vehicle if they ask.

Somewhat related....I have an old 500 and a sports bike....I decided to take the sports bike on a 4000 mile trip. As mentioned by yourself and others, mtfu Thumbs Up

Take the sports bike, or take the G reg and fix it at the roadside with cable ties when it breaks, either way, MTFU

its €89.50 per year.
Alas AFAIK the ADAC isn`t an option for the OP, as it appears they are no longer accepting new memberships from people with UK addresses Thumbs Down

I am with https://www.lynbrookins.co.uk/80480/info.php?p=3 for my 'H' FZR-R which costs me about £60 tpft pa which includes occasional travel abroad and breakdown cover.I prefer to have breakdown cover on all of my vehicles as you never know when 'THAT' occasion might arise.

On my R1 I have UK and Continental breakdown and recovery and that costs me £45 pa and it comes as part of my combined policy for my KTM and XR which includes foreign travel for £110 tpft pa.

I had the same problem. The only solution was to have the breakdown cover provided through my insurance to cover European breakdown at an extra cost, even though that same company wouldn't provided the service as a separate contract (if I didn't go through insurance).

I couldn't find one company who would provide it otherwise.

Although, the older the bike the easier it is to fix yourself on the side of the road so the MTFU comments aren't far off Wink

P.S. DOUBLE CHECK with your insurance that European Breakdown is covered for your age of vehicle. Quite often they will advertise it, but in the small print you'll have to pay a small surcharge to actually get it.

Worth checking your policy - MCE give I think 150 days European cover included in the price of your premium.

That's correct, this is who I use. However, there is an age limit to the breakdown cover. In order to have it cover older bikes, you have to phone them and let them know so they can add it to the cover (you'd think they would do this anyway since they know the age of your bike for insurance, but alas) and there might be a surcharge.

Age limit on the bikes I'm assuming, and not the rider?

I'm more likely to break down than my bike - old age and continental cheap plonk is my weakness Laughing

Wotcha.

I've done a fair bit of mainland Europe on a bike that's over 50 years old - never broke down, didn't get killed - just do it.

Germany is no distance away! I do similar mileage 10+ times a year in a 320,000 km car with no breakdown.

I'd suggest that if you're really worried just get a premium bank account. Mine with co-op does free breakdown without registering the vehicle. Barclays do the same I think, in fact, probably most banks.

That is correct. Same with a lot of other breakdown services that come bundled with other services i.e. bank accounts, even though they obviously don't want you to know this (until the time comes that you break down).

I've done quite a bit of travelling across Europe with no problem I couldn't handle myself. However, the worst case scenario is that you're stranded in a foreign land unable to fix and / or move your bike. What do you do in this situation if you don't have the correct cover? Pay out of pocket for a tow back to the UK? Abandon the bike?

There's no need for breakdown cover, but it is nice knowing you're covered if the worst does happen.

You could have a trawl through this lot.

I had a quick butchers and it seems that the AA do cover for bikes of any age......at what price though?? I wouldn't like to hazard a guess.

I used to use Europ Assistance many years ago, they were very good on the one occasion I needed their help. They have been bought out recently and are now known as Aria Assistance.....looks like they no longer cover bikes now though.
