Bought a tag last week and picked it up today and after checking the box I can't find my certificate of authenticity, I'd imagine I should have one?

Ought I to have the slightest idea what you are on about?

Because I really don't and as such am now wondering how a seemingly coherant sentence, written in English, which is my first language, has utterly no meaning to me whatsoever.

Well Erm, where did you buy it from? If Ernest Jones as it says in the title then give them a call and ask them. Not rocket science.

Think he means he bought a watch but didn't get the bit of paperwork they come with. Without that the watch is clearly useless.

What, watches need a bit of paper to be able to tell the time, now?

Yes it explains how the big hand and the little hand work Smile

From memory with my tags I only got a serial number card. I have never got a certificate of authenticity. Both bought brand new from jewellers by me so I know they are the real thing.

I assume you have a receipt to support the purchase? Even if I were to sell my watches as second hand I would show/pass on the purchase receipt as proof of the watches authenticity.

If there is doubt then get a jeweller to pull the back off the watch, though be aware some will not do this preferring to get them sent off to a tag service center.

My tags boxes are in the loft so if I get time later I will check exactly what came with them.

For me, the big thing would be the purchase receipt, first of all to support any warranty claim and also for proof that it is not fake. In my experience, anyone selling a genuine one will have an original receipt to support its authenticity.

You should have a stamped warrenty card from the dealer. Alternatively if you are scared of authenticity then try entering the serial number on trusted.com Thumbs Up

With the price of Tag watches, I'm quite glad I have a certificate with mine.

A receipt means nothing other than payment has taken place.

Boxes and paperwork, including receipts can be faked and/or bought off the internet. Nowadays a certificate isn't a guarantee of an original. I've heard stories (so probably not true then) of jewellers being taken in by authentic looking watch with paperwork and box.

I think the only way when buying 2nd hand is to check serial number and other identification marks (e.g. Rolex put small stuff on the dial sometimes missed by fakes). Even then it may be a gamble depending on who/where you're buying from.

That said I've a mechanical homage Rolex style (no Rolex branding so not actually a fake) that I'm well impressed with by the accuracy and build quality. Only I know I didn't pay Rolex money for it Very Happy

I still find it amazing that people pay extortionate amounts for what essentially does the same as the phone you have in your pocket. Laughing

I appreciate anything (including the watch itself) can be faked, but a receipt, and a stamped card with serial number would be on my list. Acid test other than what others have said here is to get the back removed and the guts checked out.

Ernest Jones is a reputable company and an authorised TAG Heuer stockist - what do you need a certificate for? Who do you want to convince it is authentic: yourself or a future purchaser?

That most people will have paid an extortionate amount for Smile

I'm more surprised that people pay an extortionate amount for a watch that most people will assume is a fake anyway.

Why buy an Aston Martin when a Ford focus will do the same job? It's all about the bling innit.

I have a Tag, Kirium, turned out to be the worst watch I ever bought!
1200 quid and it no longer works, and they want 180 quid to fix it.

It stopped telling the time properly after about 20 months, sent it back, they said they sorted it and it started doing the same.

They said that because it was not serviced every year, it was not working properly.

So sits in a lovely box in the draw!

Going to get a Casio for a tenner!

£1200 for a watch would equate to £1 every time I looked at my watch for a year. Only I wouldn't wear it at work or at home, just when I'm out somewhere special, which isn't a lot. So maybe somewhere in the region of £200 a look for the first year. But then every look after that is free. Only it's not, because you need it serviced, so it will still cost £30 a look.
