A ducati monster in India... is it possible?

I've just come back after a month long trip around India, loved every minute of it, but really missed my bike... The Enfield Bullet 350 was fun but didnt quite cut it like my monster.

just kept thinking, wouldn't it be great if I had my bike here, so I was wondering if anyone had done anything similar.

i am off to India again in May, probably just for a week, but it would be great if I could have the monster shipped over, ride it around for a week, and then ship it back.

any ideas?

Not an ideal bike if you plan to travel around a bit. It is possible, but very expensive.

Theres allot of enfield 500s about from what i have heared... imo anything else would just be a liability and attract allot of attention, not really of the dodgey kind but will be annoying to return to your bike and haveign to fight a crowd of curious onlookers away Very Happy

How about seeing if you can get a cheapish trail style bike over there? Not sure what the market is, but I suspect there would be more than there are ducatis.

Something like a dr350, xr400 etc... go for the 600/650 version and you'll have almost as much power as your ducati makes I suspect.
You might even be able to buy one in the UK and have it shipped over for a similar price to return shipping for your ducati.

These kind of bikes will not only be more hardy if you're going on not too great roads, but are also less likely to get damaged by dust/sand etc.

been to india loads before, my parents do business there, and i have never seen a 'nice' bike Razz

the difference is that people here have bikes for fun, over there it is for reliability and cheap travel. the big posters boast the 100km/l out of these new bikes that are about 150cc AMAZING! the slogan is ' Fill up once a month!'

they have a dual ignition system o something, using two spark plugs in the head for varying conditions!

great stuff!

But i wouldnt reccomned taking the monster over, the roads are hazardous and insurance is non existent really, and there is a chance u could mess it up..or break down!

imported japanese superbikes are the new big thing in india at the mo

mainly in big cities, mumbai, surat etc but also say some on the highways. they are seen as rich boys toys, as you rightly said the main emphasis for bikes in india is economy. thats why you see so many more bikes than cars.

you guys are right, its more trouble than its worth to have the ducati shipped over there. but i'll definately try to hire a mid sized jap import for a week or so next i'm down, which should be in april/may!

I can imagine the import duty fees to be crippling. I fancy bringing a few exotics back home to Indonesia, like a duke 748, but if you don't happen to be in a member's club (usually full of rich bitch generals with more money than sense), you're buggered. Besides, back home, you can't ride bikes on the toll roads Middle Finger

the seat cowl on the monster was standard

all monsters apart from the dark models come with a rear seat cowl. i got the limited edition capirex model which comes with the lateral white stripe and a few bits of carbon added on.
