short vs long boots

Hi All,

Hope all is well.

I have decided to get a pair of new boots which are not long.

My current spada st1 is a pain in the morning to put on and take off. I have to zip up the boot and then stretch my trouser over the boot which takes few minutes to do and few mins to undo .

also doesn't look good.

I am thinking of getting a short boot. in terms of protection , are they any different for city riding ?
I spoke to a sales man and he was saying the long boots are only for track days and race and not necessary for normal riding. Also I was always thinking the more metal and iron pieces it has on , the safer it is .

I was wrong according to him as it is the quality of stitch etc rather than the metal and the metal I was specifically interested in and though it protects the toes, is what is known as sliders so having all this in mind, I am thinking of getting a short boot as the protections are the same for city riding .

Am i right ?

Whether it'll be safe enough or not depends on what kind of crash you're planning on having.

The real question you should ask is "Do I feel safe in these?" "Am I prepared to sacrifice a bit of safety for increased comfort/convenience?"

I've got some Alpinestars Fastlane boots which I wear on nice days and commutes to work. They're about the size of hi top basketball boots but with a padded ankle, armoured little toe area and steel piece in the sole. I can wear them all day at work without looking or feeling weird but the wind against my shin feels a bit odd on long ride outs.

They're great as a summer boot or one where the destination is going to mean walking a lot.

I've been riding in short boots similar to those you've posted, since last summer, all through winter and only now are they showing signs of wear, the soles have started to part at the toes. Mine are Nitro hoopers. I like long boots but started wearing the short one after my long boots popped the stitching at the heal after only a few months riding. They feel nice and sturdy/safe, the only downside is the rain gets in the top and fills em up and you get cold ankles

Sliders don't make a massive difference.

However, to my mind ankle protection DOES, or at least can do.

A colleague had a nasty accident where his leg was snapped above the ankle and ground along the road. He was wearing trainers, but could as well have been wearing low boots. If he'd been wearing higher boots with a decent overlap I suspect he'd have just had the broken leg (I had similar, was home in two days) rather than months of bone regrowth getting addicted to morphine in hospital.

Personally speaking, I'd never wear short boots. The extra protection you get from ankle and shin protectors can make all the difference.

After my crash last year (well, when I say my crash, it was actually someone who crashed into me), the paramedics asked me if I had pain anywhere and apart from my back, I said my leg was a bit sore (I was up and hobbling about at this point). They asked to have a look, so I obliged. I took my boot off, rolled up the leg of my textiles and then saw the two paramedics eyes widen, look at each other and hurriedly got me to sit down. There was a huge Indentation in my shin, how on earth it wasn't broken is beyond me but, without the protection of the boots, it probably would have been a lot worse.

I've got some high-ankle (read short) boots which I sometimes wear if I'm just popping out on the bike, which isn't that often anymore. They're the most comfortable for walking in, and they offer my feet and ankles as much protection as I'd need doing the riding I do when I wear them.

They don't offer any leg protection, but I'm not expecting to need much with the riding they experience. If I want leg protection I wear one of my other sets of boots, usually my AStars supertech if I'm going for a blat.


I did, completely unintentionally, and whilst messing around on a ridiculously slippy floor, kick a doorframe tremendously hard in the ankle boots once, so much so I initially thought I'd broken my leg. Once the initial pain subsided after a few minutes, I managed to get the boot off and there was no sign at all it had been in such an incident. I did manage to tear quite a bit of muscle in my legs, but no bone damage. So the boots protected me pretty solidly.

They're Hein Gericke ones btw, can't remember what they're called though.

I've considered getting AlpineStars Fastlane many times but always chickened out. That ankle area is always going to take it bad in a crash and they just don't look up to the job.

Hardly anyone wears proper boots here. I'm the only guy in my building who turns up with proper boots on out of several motorcyclists but I just see it as an important area. The most annoying part to fuck up (apart from the brain).

And, eh... the spine. And internal organs...you get my point though.

For 'daily' stuff I'd generally wear goretex army boots. Fine for walking in once you're used to it and always done me ok in the many crashes I've had with them - though nothing serious.

I'd prefer to have a layer of decent leather there over having stronger plasticy bits lower down but leaving possibility of a gap between trousers and boots.

They are a slightly longer short boot, your ankle sits roughly where the black triangle on the side is, so it does cover a bit more of your leg than a trainer. Look good under jeans, have a steel shank in the sole along with the usual reinforcements, and those buckles are all metal. I've found myself wearing them more and more compared to my more traditional boots, although the waterproof liner makes them very hot in warm weather (its not goretex).

When I started I got a pair of the short Akito Miami boots.
Loved them and get replacement when needs after about 3 years.
Why I liked them is they were great for actually walking around when off the bike.

I now wear a long pair (cheapie Aldi, but ok) for winter and what I'd wear for longer distances. Going back to a short pair in summer.

I was knocked off whilst wearing [short] steel toe cap boots (back in 2007) and broke some bones in my foot, ever since then I've always worn tall/decent boots (currently Alpinestars SMX5 WP)

Long boots with ankle/shin protection for me personally, no guarantee, but i'd rather take my chances with them than a short one in a lot of accident scenarios
