Long Journey on CG

Hello,

I am planing a 225 mile round trip on my cg .

The idea is to go and visit my dad over in the lake district for a week or two then ride back again. I know that i am being ambitious as its only a 125 bike but can anyone give me some tips or share any experiences? I am thinking about things like doing an oil change before the journey etc..

You will beat my record by about 10 miles did 200miles on more than one occasion, its not all that bad..

Stay away from any roads where you will need to go fast, dual carrage ways e.t.c. if you do end up on these try and stick to the side or ride behind lorrys e.t.c.

Take as many rests as you feel like you need, every 70miles at least i reckon, take a big bottle of water, get some tunes on through on one earphone.

Check the tyres/chain/oil/brakes/clutch before seting off... obvious but its easy to forget...

Be carefull with the petrol, 100+miles at more or less full wack will eat petrol allot quicker than normal, i got worried when seting off after 10miles and the bike stopped, it had ran right up to reserve, usually i got quite a bit more out of it...

To do allot of distance the best way, especially if your going slow is to go at night, motorway if you can, dual carrageways if not, leave at 3am and you will be there before any traffic is out, meaning you can go on any road and not have an angry que of traffic following!

Well itll be interesting!! Oil isnt too important on them unless its close to the service interval. The likelyhood of anything going wrong is minimal, itll just be boring.

Ooo..bluddy hell..I own a CG (as you know) ..and used to live near the Lake District. I would not consider going back there on my lil' CG to visit friends, mainly because I personally would want to go faster on the motorway.

My bike does 70ish on a good day...but we all know motorway speed is 80+.

You have been given good advice there though.

Where does he live ?? I used to live in Barrow.

It's all about planning your route.

Take your time mapping it all out, avoid any fast moving roads, that'll keep you interested, and you won't get hounded by faster moving traffic.

Get some music going, take some stuff to eat on the way, and have fun.

I did 200 miles or so in one day on my old cg125.

Bassically had only recently started biking and rode around with a friend on a 125 moped and we decided we wanted to go somewhere for a day. We wanted a simple route and somewhere we both vaguely knew the way too so it was decided we would go to rhyl, was a fun journey but half way home and my back was killing me, cg's aren't the best bikes for long journeys but it can be done.

I did a 380 mile round trip on an NSR. Like said before lube / tighten chain, top up oil and don't forget your tool kit. If your using a rucksack, your back will hurt but hey. Roadtrip.

Piece of piss. Just pace yourself and make sure you know the range of your fuel tank

Yeah Rhyl did suffer over the years. I too had wicked memories of it from childhood. I was amazed at how small the fair is I think I'll become rich and buy Rhyl and paint it n' sh1t Make it look nice again.

Hi, Thanks for all of the replies. I will change the oil before i go anyway. Good idea about the music and also setting off early in the morning.

looks like its going to be an interesting trip, and maybe a good idea to take the waterproofs after the weather we have been having lately.

I have honda care breakdown assistance so should be ok there.

The bike should be up to it. The limiting factor is how much your arse can take.

A mate of mine rode an H100 from Melrose (scottish borders) to Orkney and back. Didn't take him much longer than the rest of the group on 500cc+ bikes.

My best tip is to leave as soon as you can. Don't stand phaffing about in the morning and thinking 'I'll have another cup of tea.', get on the bike and go. Find somewhere to about a tank of fuel into your journey THEN stop for a cup of tea and a sandwich, you will find that once you are on the road and into your journey, the distance evaporates and you get to your destination in daylight.

For a CG125 I would take a basic tool kit (spanners and screwdrivers) so you could tighten anything that gets loose (eg chain) take the carb off and possibly the wheels if you had to. Take a spare plug, you can buy oil in any petrol station if you need it.

I did Carlisle to a place near Anglesea on my CB125 a couple of years ago, no problem.

When you say you are going accross, I presume you are in the North East. When I go over there on a small bike I go along the A686 and the A689 through Alston which runs roughly from Bishop Auckland to Penrith. Just to the west of Alston is Heartside pass which is very steep and twisty with a Cafe on top (the highest in England). Very popular with bikers.

The Autocycle Owners Club do a run along this route from Hartleypool to Whitehaven every year and they are on 30+ year old autocycles (think butchers delivery bike with a chainsaw engine over the front wheel) with a top speed of no more than 25mph so a CG should have no difficulties.

Would love to go to Stone Henge sometime, If i survive this trip with only a sore arse and a bit of CG lag then who knows where i will go. The furthest trip i have done up to now was 80 miles to whitby and back on a speedfight 50 and Honda Innova 125, wasnt too bad realy.

Stonehenge is nout special. Being stuck smack bang next to the busy A303 linking London to the South West doesn't help.

Salisbury Plain is a sight to see though.

Having just done a 200 miles in the last 2 days (been too doncaster and around doncaster and back again)

Basically it was a trip onto the a19 at thirsk and then hit the A1 M62 then M18 then the a19 again somewhere in the doncaster area! (just following my mate who was in his car)

Allthough must add i did it on a 500 so I was cruising effortlessly at 80-90mph most of the way AHEM I MEAN 70mph OFFICER

The longest trip I did on a 125 was upto newcastle up the a19 and through the tyne tunnel.

You should get 100 + miles too the tank.

Your bike will come with a basic tool kit (my SR had one and the ER has one)

Also dont try and ride the bike full throttle in 5th gear, back off a bit and instead of going 60 + try doing 50/55mph just its much easier on the engine!

Respect to you..... i use a 125 to get everywhere furthest i go is penrith at the moment have done a trip to doncaster in the past... i live near whitehaven in cumbria.... its good fun to ride long distances... just make sure you dont make yourself too tired... and if u start to feel cold find some where to stop and have a cuppa to warm yourself up... and watch out for crappy cumbrian road surfaces they can be rather unforgiving......

If a guy can go 11,500 miles across Canada on a moped, you can do the Lake District on a CG125 quite happily, IMHO.
