Is it:

Pay?
Security?
Challenge?
Work conditions?
Responsibility?
Hob nobbing (networking)

I've been waiting ages and 6 came all at once (I've worked for 3 of them and currently work for one of them).

I'm having a bit of a toss up between:

A ok paying job (not many hours a week hence high hourly rate) secure till 2016, where I am boss, but it is unchallenging, and has no networking (because I am boss) potential. (14 mile motorway commute). Plus nobody has ever heard of this company. Kind of like Bolton Wanderers....

Vs

Current insecure as hell job, which pays rate which is considered gouging, but it is challenging, stretches me, looks good on CV and allows me to widen my circle of contacts (one of which got me a shag a few days ago). (9-17 mile commute depending on where I am asked to go, which means I can claim mileage). Everybody has heard of this company, kind of like Manchester City FC. A fairly big place but there are bigger.

Security is subjective,

Job satisfaction is important, at least you can enjoy it whilst it lasts.

As they say, all good things come to an end.

Pay.

Everything else is balanced against that.

Do the shit whilst your young - insecure job with loads of network potential, having to move around a lot and shit pay, and reap the benefits later?

I had a 'secure job' that was unchallenging, underpaid, and I was undervalued as an individual, worked with absolute cretins, and either not enough or too many hours.

I'm now in an insecure job in a different industry, on similar pay, might have to move to London in a few weeks Sad but work with awesome people and building a massive network, and work on really exiting projects which will look amazing on my CV, and after a few years will (hopefully) be able to pick and choose where I wanna be

Every job you get will be shit in some regard unless you run your own company and pull the strings yourself; be your own boss, but then that encroaches on responsibility which is only really earned with experience.

Largely job satisfaction but no point being happy in your work if you're miserable at home because of low pay.

Pay and security.

Without either of those you would be poor/jobless, everything else depends on your outlook and circumstances.

I've chosen low pay in return for a massive reduction in stress. Only you can answer what it's worth to you.

Hi

A balance (and the best balance varies between people).

Secure job can just be one that is so crap that staff turnover is so high they can't afford to let any staff go.

Of your 2 choices, not sure I would want the one that pays poorly and has no real prospects / challenges.

All the best

Keith

Depends a fair bit on situation in some respects - if for example I was on the verge of suddenly becoming homeless, pay would jump up the scale.

For me personally i'd order the priorities as

Challenge
Responsibility
Pay
Security
Work conditions
Hob nobbing (networking)

That being said i'd sacrifice a fair amount of some of those for a reduction in stress if it gave almost the same amount of job-satisfaction.

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

Oh, and a decent, unmonitored internet connection.

Easy to arrange if you're in charge of IT for the office. Might suck to be those other people who you have to set up monitoring for, mind... Wink

Pay, challenge, security and job satisfaction in that order. Some tie in with others though so lose one and the other suffers. I have had jobs that I absolutely hated, mostly due to lack of any sort of challenge. Didn't last long in any of them as I felt it was sucking my life away. Mundane work definitely suits some people but not me.

I know your pain, I'm stuck in a job that exposes me to some really funky and modern tech but bores me to death as we dont get to mess about with stuff properly, it also pays very well for doing so little.

I have a job offer on the table that will pay me less for more hours with a bigger commute but should offer far more challenge as well as a better shift slot. They also contractually state they will fund training when I want it.

I really cant decide Crying or Very sad

It definitely depends on the type of work involved and also your circumstances.

Without a long explanation, I've had roles/jobs where it's been very hard dirty physical graft for weeks at a time, and doing pretty much hard manual work, digging, cabling laying pipes/ducts and such stuff.

In those types of situation, only the Pay if it's acceptable for the work involved is really high on the list. When you've had weeks of back breaking graft on sites, and come home shitty and dirty every day, the challenge is not something your even slightly interested in generally.

Depends on your personal goals, ambitions and needs at the time.

Ie - If you had a young family and no savings, then definitely security.

Well that fits my work conditions quite closely but the work is much more involved than cable trenches and just physical graft and the satisfaction comes from being allowed to do whatever I want in any way I want to.

Security by far but work conditions as a close second.

Just left working for BT due to it stressing me out way too much. The customers and complaints didn't bother me. It was having a job were I was recruited as a Retentions Advisor but not long after training found myself basically in the 'problem solver' team. If dealing with angry customers, shite hardware and indian colleagues wasn't bad enough I had sales targets to hit that was double what was realistically possible.

More money more problems as they say.

Security. But not in your job, but in your industry.

My current job is not massively secure, but I know that I would have another job in weeks.

That means that pay, conditions and work/life balance are my priorities.

Challenge is irrelevant as it depends where in your career you currently are. For some people stacking shelves is the most challenging they would want, for some becoming MD of the business is the ultimate goal (also my goal). Ambition is personal.

Responsibility and pay are intrinsically linked. You can't have one without the other in majority of cases.

Networking is necessary in basically any white-collar role. It's tiresome, but has to be done. Knowing people helps.

Depends on your circumstances and responsibilities.

Such as do you have a mortgage or rent. Monthly finance/credit card payments. Other mouths to feed. Etc.

I would say the better paying job with less security is good, not because of the pay, but because of the opportunities and experiences it will give you that become an advantage in the future.

Hi

A further point not raised is how you feel about yourself in the job.

If you feel that your job is utterly useless, how long could you keep doing it whatever the pay / security / etc? How long before you hate yourself for being useless?

All the best

Keith

It would rather depend on the pay and what other pay I could get.

If some big company were to pay me loads of money despite that I felt my job was utterly useless, I doubt I'd be hating myself particularly - I'd probably be enjoying all the farkles I'd be buying with said dosh Smile.
