I wish i would never had sold my trusty rusty CG it woudlnt die...

but anyways, just finished rebuilding my calipers, bled them up - seem to work a treat

go to test ride the bike, it starts but its really erratic/ wont idle

if you try to rev it seems to stutter, one thing it doesnt seem to back fire any more, but deffo sounds like its running really rough

carbs were "maticulously" cleaned 2 weeks ago

its had new air/ oil filters as well as oil and plugs.

got my hand held infrared thermometer on the down pipes an the 4th seems a little bit cooler than the rest, but all are hot to touch

Crying or Very sad

Check that the caps are screwed onto the leads securely and that it fits snug onto the top of the spark plug Thumbs Up

Carbs could be wildly out of balance. Also, did you check the idle screws were correctly adjusted and that the float needles were in good condition?

A easy way to check how bad the leads are is to start it in the pitch black and look for small blue sparks/arcs along the leads where the insulation is breaking down and shorting to earth.

i doubt this will matter but, the bike is fitted with a Scorpion can, would/ could that effect anything?

the bike also came with the original can too, so could always replace it

Job to tell, swopping out is easy enough to prove, I fitted a viper can to my zx6r some time ago and it made it run awful to the point of actually stalling out from high rpm's, it was only happy up to 4000 rpm, swopped back to then oem amd all was well again, couldn be asked to rejet so left it as oem.

right, had the carbs out again to clean & check as per Petes thread

everything looked good

main jets were 1 & 4 *98
2 & 3 *100 which i think is standard

checked plugs, 1 (from the left sitting on the bike) was black, so cleaned that. the rest were pretty clean

put fresh juice in, opened all the taps to make sure fuel had filled the bowls etc (all a-ok)

put the tap to reserve as i dont think there is enough in there to hit the normal feed, took about 10 seconds an it fired into life but still running like shite, if you tried to rev it would stutter again

turned off, check the headers 1 & 3 hot 2 & 4 cold

i have just ordered 2 coils anyways as the leads look pretty scabby on the current set.

im lost

Hi

Could be coils, but unusual thing is that it would mean both coils down at once (ie, one coil for cylinders 1 & 4, the other for 2 & 3 - so 2 and 4 being cold means a lack of spark from one side of both coils). Assuming you have the leads on the right plugs Wink .

Are the tiny O rings in place between the caps on the carbs and the carb bodies? They are very easily lot.

Lack of a backfire does suggest that fuel isn't getting through (unburnt fuel through the engine into the exhaust would result in backfire in the exhaust).

All the best

Keith

just had another poke around (as im itching to get out an ride..havent rode since passing my test!!!)

the plug on 2 was loose (i dunno if this is a red herring or not) - the thread on the cap is green, i cleaned this up with a bit of scotchbrite, but it doesnt really have a good purchase on lead

im guessing your cant really trim the leads back a touch?

there were no loud pops when it was running but it was really really lumpy, if i can get the cap back on 2 i will see if i can get it to run again to check plugs for wetness - steady now!

cheers Karma

Did you run it long enough to warm it up? Could be just the choke circuits not working on 3 and 4.

As for the plug lead, there's no reason why you can't shorten it for a screw-on plug cap. You might have to braddle the end a bit to get the cap started though when you replace it.

Hi

I have trimmed copper core plug leads back a few mm several times to enable them to make better contact. Although not on a Bandit. Not sure if the leads are moulded into the coil or into the plug cap, but if so make sure the leads are still long enough.

All the best

Keith

quick update, trimmed back the lead on 3 an it seems to be firing now - pipe was hot, but not as hot as 1 & 2

i checked the lead on 4 it was like new, swapped the plug from 1 to 4 an tried to restart

1 was ok but 4 was still cold

will try the coils when they arrive,,,fingers crossed 4th cylinder is down to a duff coil

i tried canking it over with the 4th plug out an it was sparking away, so im really really hoping the coil is breaking down under load or its a fueling issue Sad

It can't be breaking down under load if it's not firing because there's no load on it. Look at doing the carbs again.

for the life of me i cant see where it is blocked though, all the jets are as clear as a whistle, all passageways (if thats the right name) got drenched in carb/ brake cleaner an a airline shoved up them

there is fuel in the bowls...

could it be a stuck valve - compression test?

one thing i havent checked is float heights, but the guy who cleaned the carbs the other week said they were all within tolerences...?

Valves are easy to check, so is compression. If you're having the carbs off again anyway might as well check the clearances.

I had a similar issue with my GSXR1100G (related motor, same coils).

In the end it was down to the one of the coils being faulty in some way and that the float valve needles and seats needed replacing.

Will have a crack at take the cover off to check the valves.

is it best to turn the engine by the generator or stick it in gear an turn the rear wheel?
