I would like to get my first bike after passing my cbt but I'm torn between 3 mid range bikes:

- Yamaha Fazer 600
- Honda Hornet 600
- Suzuki Bandit 600

All will be early/mid 2000 models. Any advice about strengths and/or reasons to avoid??

You know you can't ride a bike bigger than a 125 after your CBT?

If you've made a mistake and meant to put DAS then I'd narrow it down to a Fazer or Hornet.

My thoughts on Bandits-
Bandit's are half decent bikes, they do most things to an acceptable level and that's about it really, it's nothing special but not a boring bike either. It still has more than enough power to entertain a newbie and it's rewarding to ride as you have to push the bike to the top end of the revs to get some speed out of it and have fun.

Negatives:
Weak brakes
Bad suspension
Thin paint

Positives:
Cheap
Reliable
Comfortable

Don't get me wrong, Bandit's are still okay bikes but if you can afford a Fazer or Hornet, they're a better option as they pretty much do everything better than a Bandit. Although if you're willing to spend a bit of money on a Bandit they can be good bikes Hagon springs + different fork oil (£90-ish) in forks and a 2nd hand GSXR rear shock (£50-ish) and if you service the brakes, get some good pads on and add braided brake lines the bike will be massively improved with about £300 worth of mods/upgrades.
I'd only recommend a Bandit if you had a low budget as they're very good value for money in my opinion (I bought a 2000/mk2 bandit 600 for £925 with just 22k on the clock) or unless your willing spend money on improving it, otherwise i'd save myself the trouble and buy a Hornet or Fazer.

Add a CBR 600 to that list - head and shoulders above anything you listed.

£2k will get you an early 00/01 F4i - unless you do actually mean CBT and not DAS as mentioned, then its a 125 Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

I was deciding between a bandit and a fazer too, among others. Ended up going for a fazer, seems better built and I got a better bike for my money.

I got a 99 fazer with 17k on the clock last year for a shade over £1k with a long MOT and some tax. Just MOT'd it again last week and it flew through.

The bike is great, it's not got the performance, or more importantly the handling, of my old CBR obviously and it's the handling that really lets it down imo. But if you can look past that, and see the bike for what it is they are a fantastic buy.

+1 for Fazer or Hornet. I have a Fazer and for commuter/weekend toy it has everything I want, and more than enough power than I'll need. Friend owned a hornet and spoke nothing but good about it (then traded it in for a Striple). I also had a Bandit which I didn't like, but go with what feels right for you
