Any MOT boffins out there that can put me right on end cans. Confused

I've got carbon ovals on my Storm. They are NOT marked "not for road use" but don't carry a BS mark.

What's the law on this? And, do they check the decibel output??

Cheers

I was told by a friend of mine who is a biker and runs his own garage (doing MOT's) that as long as the can is not marked "NOT FOR ROAD USE" or "RACE USE ONLY" and, in the opinion of the tester, is not overly loud then it will pass. Apparantly you don't need a kite or E mark anymore.

Put it this way - my old Blue Flamed bandit passed with no trouble and this was not my mate doing it.

thats right last year when I took my bike they said they couldnt pass it as it had no BSAU number so i nipped to my mates and wrote the number on a bit of Masking tape, stuck it on my end can, and they had to pass it, Thumbs Up Very Happy Thumbs Up as theyre not allowed to remove anything from the bike.

This year there was no pissing about tho, it isnt a failure, but its entirely up to the tester whether its too loud or not.

Hi

Used to be that it had to be the original manufacturers can, or marked with a BS stamp or E mark, and these had to be stamped on (so masking tape with writing on it does not count). Also had to be quiet enough in the testers opinion.

Now it just has to not be marked "Not For Road Use" and has to be as quiet as a standard exhaust in reasonable condition in the opinion of the MOT tester.

All the best

Keith

I guess my TL1000R will not pass with the Scorpion Race Cans on then!

Good thing I have the standard cans just for MoT and Producer's from the Cops! I did used to have a shiney metal look sticker with BSEU number on the race cans on my Firestorm, but I think everyone would see through that and fail it!

Best bet, get ae crash damaged can for your bike, in good running order, but scraped, it'll be cheap and you'll easily pass the MoT! They aren't exactly gunna fail it for being scratched or for the fact it's obvious that you will swap the can when you get home! Cool

It also all depends on how freindly the garage is, one of my bikes passed its MOT with a can marked 'for race use only' basically the inspector said he knew all I would do is put the std can back on for the test and the race one back on as soon as it passed.

Happened to me as well - inspector said the blue flame can was not strictly road legal but said "I must have put it on after they tested it" (if you know what I mean) and also said "anyway its sounds bloody brilliant"

The're not all miserable jobsworths.

I also think its worth going back to the same testing station - even with your car - its helps to get to know them and I find they will "advise" on certain things rather than issue an outright fail.

The law changed recently, You now dont need a B.S. marked silencer fitted so you can have any end can you want as long as:

A) Its not marked: NOT FOR ROAD USE / FOR OFF ROAD USE ONLY

B) And its not to loud.

All of this is of coarse down to the testers disgression / interpretation of the new legislation and how bad his / her hearing is!.
( i got the info from a friend of mine who is a bike M.O.T inspector)

When my bike needs a new MOT, I'll just phone up the MOT place first and ask before I take it down. That way I can put on the right can if needed.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat, have to get my er-5 MOT'd this month but have a "not for road use" system onboard.

I'll just phone ahead and ask him if he's that bothered about it. If he is, I'll go to the next garage, then the next, and next....Wink
