Had a call out this morning to a Harley whose carb was pissing petrol all over the steaming hot engine. Guy said that it had been into various shops to be fixed, worked for a little while, then started to overflow just as he arrived home.
Did the usual, cleaned out the float valve, checked float levels, all well within spec.
Ran it up, carb holding its fuel, seemed to be an easy fix. Turned my back, petrol all over the floor.

Seemed that the needle valve was leaky, to prove the point I took off the float bowl, held the float closed and had the guy turn the fuel on. Looking for the point that fuel started to flow I eased the float down. Fuel literally shot from the float valve, almost as if there was a high pressure fuel pump at work.

What was causing this? Answer at the bottom of the page.

The hot engine was evaporating the fuel in the tank, the tank breather had become blocked, the pressure had nowhere to go but down into the float bowl via the needle valve which was insufficient to hold back the pressure..
