Right, proper noob question...

The CG has a fuel tap, and I've got that when it is in a horizontal position that that is fuel cut off but I'm not sure about the on and reserve settings.

When the lever part of the tap is up, does this mean its in reserve? Thats where it was when I bought the bike. I dont want to run out and find I'm stuck (no fuel gauge)

Secondarily, the choke. I'm not convinced that I have it worked out - or it may be that something has been tinkered with. Its a little lever which has 3 positions. The downwards position is clearly full on so I assumed middle would be mid choke and upwards would be choke off but no matter how long I have left the bike flicking the switch up results in it stalling....

The fuel tap will look something like this.

https://b2bimg.bridgat.com/files/CD70_fuel_tap.jpg

should be marked. In this case the fuel tap is in the "on" position. Have a look at yours.

The choke is for starting the bike. If it has 3 positions it will be off, half or full, in a fashion. The colder it is the chances are the more choke you may need for starting the engine. When the engine warms you can set the choke off. Normally the engine tells you when it has been choked enough. Laughing

If the bike is cutting out even when its been ran on choke for a while then perhaps the idle on the carb needs sorted out. Theres a little screw there that you can turn. It'll set more or less tick over revs.

tickover/idle speed screw shown on the carb here.

Right, been out and found that it is marked, it was just covered by a layer of crud and yes, it was set to reserve - that could have been fun...

If I can recal. All the ones in the yard (CG chinese copy things) and the pic above, that sits on the bike with the white tube in the tank so there is a high chance yours will be the same.

Which model CG is it? On mine (1996 BR-T), full choke is up, and off is down - the lever is curved to make it easier to switch off when riding. Mine won't run on choke either without a tiny bit of throttle, I believe due to the rudimentary choke not increasing the idle speed, as more sophisticated ones do, to allow the bike to idle on choke.

Pretty much the same on mine. I can almost always switch it fully off immediately after starting with full choke and giving a quick blip of the throttle, but sometimes it needs a minute or so on half to idle nicely - usually if it has sat for a while or is especially cold! If it's started often enough, sometimes it doesn't need any choke at all. Thumbs Up

Does it have electric start? It'll either be a late 'W' model if it doesn't or an early 'M1' if it does. (If it's all original, that is!)

EDIT: Just saw the eBay link in your other thread. Looks like an 'M1' to me. Thumbs Up

Just a note that despite the description of the image that you've stolen from pakwheels.com, that's not the carb on a CG125. Tut Tut

I know because it's a picture of the carb on my HN125-8. Wink

Just googled images. Thats what they came back with Sir Borg. Should be fine for reference though. Carbs are carbs for the most part. Very Happy

Well, I'm used to SU carbs, which are rather different to bike carbs (not the principle behind them, but how they are laid out and user operated etc...) Razz

Just out of interest, I though the cg125 didn't have a reserve? There's only one input tube going into the valve on my bike and on that picture.
I.e. I thought that tap was just essentially on or off so you can remove the tank when full.

Yeah I'm sure. But anyway - let's get back to the fuel tap for a sec.

Can't rightly remember but I'm SURE my choke lever was UP for ON and it'll run like shit if you leave the choke on.

My CGee only needed choke to start it - wouldn't run with it on. (OK it would... but as though it had a small dog stuck somewhere in the fuelling system)

Sadly Shaggy that link doesn't work...

I've found a couple of manuals online but they are for earlier models and their diagrams of that area of the bike are indecipherable.....

I had a haynes arrive this morning just before I left for work though

If it only idles with the choke on your idle jet is probably blocked.
