Hi,

I've heard many times that you shouldn't keep an aprilia rs 125 at a constant rpm.

I ride around 7-8k rpm. How often should I vary the rpm? Can I do 20 minutes at a constant rpm? What should the variation be? If I vary it between 6k and 8k is that OK or do I need to vary it between say 8k and 10k?

Can someone more knowledgeable share some insight on this issue? I've got a 30 mile trip (and 30 mile back) tomorrow on a 50/60 A road.

Hi

Only reason I vary the rpm when cruising at speed is so the revs go from ~7500rpm to ~8500rpm fairly often so the power valve opens and closes regularly. Just to stop it sticking.

All the best

Keith

Thanks Keith,

I don't have a power valve - there's just a blanking plate. As far as I can tell my RS is stock apart from the CDI derestriction. So I shouldn't need to vary the revs as there's no power valve so no nothing to get stuck.

I've not heard of this until someone mentioned something similar in a post last week.

More important to make sure the bike's warmed up before thrashing it and keeping on top of oil pump maintenance.

As far as I know, oil pumps need little to no maintenance and they almost never fail (but when they do you're in for trouble).

I think it's one of the long standing 2stroke myths TBH!

Engine condition, and correct maintenance is key! Also gentle warming up until your at full operating temperature and using 100% fully synth quality oil for piece of mind.

I personally think it's all about heat management, and if you keep the motor from getting too hot under full load/full throttle conditions, then it should not have a problem.

Look at the old 125GP bikes, they would be flat out on most big circuits nearly all the time, where as the 250's and the 500cc's would be jetted quite differently (same size cylinders), due partly because they did not get wound open for anything like as long or as often during a lap.

If you can control heat, ensure adequate lubrication, and prevent the on-set of detonation, I think any motor would be happy to be run flat stick all day long!

dont know about this at all

but i rode from mine to cumbria which is 150 miles each way and it was motorway for 2/3 of that at a steady 75mph.

no problems at all on my aprilia rs125 steady speed all the way.

and my other bikes crm250 sm also done same journey and no probs at all.
