Only one way of finding out.

Alternatively, just put the bike on the centre stand and put something really heavy on the back seat to get the front up and off the ground. I did that with some rope, a large waste bucket and water. Managed to take my front end off the CB1 and rebuild it with that technique.

As above.

I'd often just stick a stack of 10kg weights on the rear seat or a dumbbell through the back wheel.

Or stick some wood under the engine/frame/exhausts.

Is it because you don't have a rear paddock stand?

If you do have one, I'd just use it. Will be much easier getting it on (and off) a rear stand when it's already stable and upright on the centre stand.[/i]

What bike is it?

Can he get paddock stand bobbins for the swing arm, or a one-sided paddock stand that goes into the wheel centre?

He might not deem it worth the money, but then he might find a bargain stand on ebay. It's up if he thinks its necessary or worth it, but depending on how often he's lifting up the front of the bike, might be worth him considering a rear stand.
