https://www.honda.co.uk/motorcycles/offers/cb500x/

This offer finishes tomorrow.

I'm tempted as I can make the deposit ok (£1100) and the monthly payment is £75 x 36. Final payment is £1500.

8K Annual mileage and 0.02p per mile excess.

It's hard to find a poor review of this bike and and I think it would be a dream upgrade from my 98 GS500E.

I also looked at a 2012 NC700S with 3.5k miles for £3.7K. Slightly put off by only having the Yamaha dealer used bike warranty. (Borderline useless maybe?), but would be able to service it myself so saving some coin.

Not looking for a power house. Just comfort and smoothness and ABS, ( returning 45 year old, after 18 year gap).

Any comments on the deals or the bikes? Cheers

Deal looks OK, but you might as well go and buy a 15 year old CB500. It is the same and won't smash your bank balance at all. If anything, its about the same price as your deposit.

You get no extra performance, if you really fancy the "adventure" style, just grab a used Transalp or something. Better bike in all aspects.

If you're up for getting a new bike, then having a lot of it on 0% finance helps mitigate the loss once it rolls off the forecourt and gives you an inexpensive way of paying for it.

The one thought that occurs to me though - you say you're returning after an 18 year gap. Are you sure this is the bike you'll be happy riding next year, and the year after? Because you're tying yourself into a 3 year deal that is potentially expensive to escape from, and once you're getting some miles in you may decide that actually you'd be happier on a fully faired tourer, or laid back cruiser, or something faster, or ...

I've ridden both and prefer the torquey NC. The CB is revvier, but you need to be working the gears a bit more. Both are very similar and I've not heard a bad thing from owners of either. (People who have not as much as sat on either look down their noses at them, so be prepared for those responses momentarily.)

Mine has 17K miles on it and I have never had a major issue. The clutch cable got stiff a bit earlier than you would think and they immediately replaced it under warranty. The centre stand has now also stiffened up so that it doesn't spring back up by itself (needs to be re-greased). I have some paint chipping away on the cowl around the front headlight that I will get replaced under warranty just before the bike's second birthday in October. No rusting, except around the Givi rack I added.

But that's where the problems stop. No engine or gearbox issues. It's been a good year-round commuter and I still use it for the occasional 1-2 week trip, two up. I'm going to Scotland on it in May, for example.

Thanks.

I've looked at Transalps and really like them.

The later ones have ABS but I've got a bit of issue with getting a bike with tubed tyres on spoked wheels.

Would prefer tubeless. Maybe shouldn't be a deal breaker but I've got this on the list of preferred criteria.

Appreciate the suggestion. I'll mull it over.

I haven't had any test rides yet, just copious You Tube vids.

Can test ride the CBX i the morning.

Agree with the above comments.

I'd love a new CB500x but given that they offer little to nothing more than a 10 year old CB500 then it's really pointless buying one. Will maybe get one once the 2nd hand prices come down and I can get one with full hard luggage.

Why would tubes and spoked wheels matter mate?

I've got spokes on the KTM and tubes, as do the majority of 125s/spoked wheel off roaders and the like.

You'll be fine Wink

If you go for it, make sure it's been sorted.

How much will the bike be worth at 3 years old with 24K on the clock? If you go over the 8K PA you have to make the final payment and I would guess that this is about the auction price depending on condition.

If there is a final fee is this a PCP deal? because that would be slightly different to normal HP

see if they can give you free servicing for the lifetime of the finance as companies get a bonus for making a certain penetration level of finance with bike sales from the HP company. So may be negotiable if they are slightly off target or want your business.

See what they would do part ex too as it may work out that with free servicing, some free kit involved and higher PX value that its cheaper than buying a used one.

Also, don't forget that dealers can still discount the bikes even if on HP as its as good, if not better than cash purchases these days to them!

If you don't ask you don't get. At the end of the day its your money and depending how bad they want it will depend on the deal they can offer.

Oh and get yourself some GAP insurance if you want to change the bike after a year..... if you know what I mean?! Wink

I think they would want the book stamped by a recognised mechanic.

I read complaints on the web about the 600 mile service costing over 200 quid.

I called the dealer to ask and they said £90 for the 600 mile, then £100 for the one after at a year or 8K miles.

I had a new 535 Virago in 1995 and I remember being very precious about getting it marked, leaving it parked etc.

That puts me off getting a new bike and also having to frequent the Dealership for servicing etc.

After the Virago I feel now I've done the cruiser thing and like the dynamics of the 'standard' style of the GS 500.

With the NC700 S ( No non adventure model) 2nd hand. it is just over the 2 year Honda Warranty so not sure if the Dealer Warranty would last long enough for servicing to come into play. Fair point though. Longer term I'd be doing the work myself.

Not too hung up on the adventure style at all. Something like a half faired CBF 600 F ABS would probably do me fine for 2.5K or so and last for years. Not too heavy either.

Maybe on balance best to let the let the PCP deal slide. Too much pressure to decide tomorrow. I'm sure Honda will have something similar soon and who knows what new models will be out to drool over.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
