So - I now have 2 bikes.

One is my beloved and mint R6 - I use this when pretending to be young and a lost talent to motogp.

The other is my VFR - which I love but as it only cost £700 I use for commuting and have decided I dont care what I look like on it.
Hence it has a top box fitted and filtering lights .. and I have plastered it in reflective stuff.

Anyway .... I want to add some blue flashing lights.

Can I ? Discuss.

Nothing to discuss. No you can't.

You can't have a blue flashing light, nor can you have blue retro-reflective material anywhere on the vehicle.

The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 Section 16
Quote:

No vehicle, other than an emergency vehicle, shall be fitted with–

(a)a blue warning beacon or special warning lamp, or

(b)a device which resembles a blue warning beacon or a special warning lamp, whether the same is in working order or not.

hmmmm ! and here in lies my cunning plan.
I heard someone talking about how they had a flashing indicator on there pushbike in the 70's and got done for it ..... but as soon as they put it on their person it was allowed.

So.... new question:
Can I have a flashing blue light on my person (not on the vehicle) ?

I am determined to fit one and ride about looking like a right tit... dont ask why .. its something a man of my age needs to do.

Why not just fix a flashing blue light to your right tit and save time?

You might get tugged for steady blue lights, but prosecution or conviction seems unlikely. I've seen a few trucks festooned with deep blue lights, for example.

Better you than me though.

WHY ?

Makes no sense.

And what are " Filtering lights " ? Do they make folk take more care ?

Are they similar to the , " Baby / grandchild / brat / princess on board " shit that REALLY make folk drive more considerately ?

Those really work in my opinon - i'd be very tempted to fit them myself if I started commuting by bike again.

Theres a fazer in my area that has them and it looks like starship enterprise coming down the road every morning. It would take a very special individual to SMIDSY with it.

Presumably a light that rotates 359° or less is fine then? Either by switching directions, or by blacking part of the light out.

So they can be described as filtering lights ?

Just wondered what they actually are.

Would still count as a lamp, whether it rotated or not

All the best

This is the source of your fun if that is what you fancy.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bike-Bicycle-Cycling-4-Sounds-6-LED-Police-Car-Siren-Electric-Light-Horn-Bell-/191115938642?pt=UK_SportGoods_CyclAcces_RL&hash=item2c7f65cb52

I had one of these on my works mountain bike I used for patrol on my beat. Sgt thought I was nutts to buy it and put it on.
Was a great laugh with the kids at the local BMX park.
Probably a vid or 2 somewhere of kids having a laugh doing wheelies with a Police pushbike and sirens blazing Laughing Laughing

All in the name of public interaction and bonding of course. Cool

I did actually pull a car over using it. My mate couldn't keep it in and just stood there laughing as I spoke to the driver. Very Happy Very Happy

I had an alarm siren wired to the push-to-pass switch on my GPZ500. Single tone is fine.

The great thing about it is that it's not an ANGRY HORN! sound, so you can actually use it for its intended purpose, as a pre-emptive alert to other road users. Highly recommended, I really really must stop cocking around and get it wired into Ze Beemer.

I know you said you love your VFR... Smile

£700 is brilliant, how/where did you find it? I spent ages looking on ebay each week for several months and it just kept turning out expensive sheds.

Try a Stebel compact air horn.
Will generally fit (or be made to fit) most bikes.

Although there are the FIAMM ones from the likes of NippyNormans (BMW parts supplier but don't let that put you off). Affordable at £15 (+ £3.50 p&p).
