I ride a lot in the central area of Wales, as I'm sure many of you do. Great roads, good cafes, great scenery; in short, when you get the weather, it's biking bliss.
So why are there no major (or even minor as far as I can see) bike dealerships there? Were there any, but maybe they went under? Do you think such a business would survive? How could it be made to work?
Thousands of bikers around every decent weekend, surely you have a guaranteed customer base right there, especially if you were open Sats & Suns?
What gives? |

Yeah, kinda missed the obvious there, didn't I?
No punters, no feckin sales
Unless there's a sideline in umbrellas for sheep maybe...
It's really just me wishing I lived somewhere like Wales or the Lakes region, and wondering how I can engineer getting myself work and a roof over my head in such a place, having worked in the bike trade for some years now.
So I can do parts/service manager, obviously bugger-all general business savvy though |

I could have got work in the Lake District when I did a 2 month walking/camping holiday there. It would only have been retail, outdoor pursuits type shops, but there it was. But how to get a roof over my head when just starting with nothing? I guess I lack something in the smarts department, as others have done it |

There are quite a few big bike shops in North Wales that are all less than 10 miles away from amazing roads in their respective areas.
There's Bill Smith Motors (Yamaha dealers) in Bangor which sits on the western edge of Snowdonia National Park.
Colwyn Bay Motorcycles (Honda dealers) in Colwyn Bay (surprisingly enough ) which is on the eastern side of Snowdonia National Park.
Woods in Aberegele (Ducati and Yamaha dealers) that is 5 minutes down the road from Colwyn Bay Motorcycles.
A&D in Denbigh (Kawasaki dealers) which is right next to the Denbigh Moors and a gateway to North East Wales.
There's a small bike shop on Anglesey which has some cool roads and is about 15 minutes away from Snowdonia and there are a few other smaller shops and garages dotted around North Wales. There's probably a bigger dealer/bike shop in Wrexham but I never had any reason to go there so I wouldn't know. No idea if any of them are hiring but I always thought there was quite a lot of choice for bike shops in North Wales. |
Good info KLR. I've actually heard of most of those, we supply to all I think - don't know why North Wales hadn't occurred to me, but sounds quite feasible. What's life like generally up there, especially in regard to cost of living, rent etc? I know I could look it up, google it, whatever, but what's the use if I can get the info from the inside as it were (Google is the killer of conversation and discussion!) ?
Quite a number of outdoor gear suppliers as well I imagine? |

Depends what you like and what you want really. If you're happy to live out the way a little bit then you can rent a 3 bedroom house for £400 but at the same time if you want a luxury barn conversion/centre of town house you can spend your entire salary on it. Public transport is pretty useless and quite expensive so having your own vehicle is a must. All the big supermarkets are represented well as are some of the more bargain places like home bargains etc so your shopping bill shouldn't increase as long as you factor in getting to the supermarket and back if you end up living in the sticks.
As with most places each town has good and rough areas so you'd need to do a bit of research into where you actually wanted to live but it's not like there are gangs roaming the streets looking to start turf wars or anything like that
North Wales has a massive outdoor/adventure scene. It's one of the main things it has going for it really. There are loads and loads of mountain bike trails, rock climbing areas, walking/hiking routes, white water rafting, gorge walking routes and there is even a purpose built wave centre/surfing school being built in the tiny village that I used to live in in the Conwy Valley. That's as well as the more touristy tree top adventure courses, zip lines and general stunning scenery in the area. To reflect that there are loads of outdoor gear shops there. Just go to Betws y Coed on a sunny Saturday in the summer and then try and shoehorn yourself into one of the many outdoor shops there.
Night life in North Wales isn't great. Bangor is ok being a uni town but if you're really into your partying you'll have to head to Chester/Manchester a lot.
Join the Welsh section on here are as there a few North Walians lurking about. It is an exceptionally quiet part of the forum but when people do post in there it's usually good info. I've moved away from North Wales now but I will be visiting regularly as my parents/family and friends live there. ____________________ Now: '00 Kawasaki ZRX1100R - Past: '84 Yamaha DT125, '89 Kawasaki KLR600, '97 Yamaha XJ600N

Thanks for taking the time to write all that KLR, appreciated. Seem to have hijacked my own thread here - deviousness is apparently a trait of mine!
I think I'm gonna be looking at the job situation in the area, see if I can't put some kind of plan together.
I am very familiar with much of Wales, having walked from Chester to Conwy and done a fair bit of riding there too. For the walking thing I researched for all the best kit and so have a reasonable level of knowledge in that area (tents, waterproofs, cooking gear, general camping gear etc) - my knowledge seemed to compare favourably with people working in the shops in outdoor gear places in Keswick, Lakes, so that's a possible area of interest to look for work in. Climbing and many of the other outdoor sports I can't do as I've buggered myself up pretty comprehensively over the years - so it's camping/hill walking or motorcycle parts/service management or related stuff I'd be most interested in workwise.
Having lived in an around London most of my life, I'm used to any rowdier elements there might be, doesn't faze me as I largely keep myself to myself anyway - not much of a nightlife person anyway, biking is my no. 1 interest, would be nice to get back to the hill walking, need to get fit again! so I use my days more than evenings for entertainment anyhoo.
Once again, thanks for your replies |
