One for the healthcare/doctor people - hopefully someone might know!

TL;DR - how much will it cost to get the attached medical exams done by a doctor?

I've just received a very short notice response from my university that I'm quite possibly being put forward for a fully paid scholarship to study Chinese in China for a year (fingers crossed).

So one thing I need to do is get a medical report done. I called my doctor yesterday and asked about it. The receptionist said the price could be up to £135 (which is absolutely insane in my opinion), depending on what checks are needed. She can't tell me the exact price until she sees the report form.

I don't really want to go ahead with it yet because my place on the scholarship isn't even guaranteed, so I'm not forking out £135 for nothing. However if it's gonna cost less than that, I'll be willing.

So, I'm gonna upload the form here and hopefully some people might know how extensive this check could be, and might be able to suggest if it's gonna cost me the full whack or just a fraction of it.

The reason I'm asking here and not just going to the doctors is because they're shut on weekends, and I've been given a ridiculously short timespan to do this. I was given the news on Friday afternoon and the deadline is Monday at 12pm...

Looks mostly like a bunch of simple tick boxes to me, but the last page has some stuff that I don't really know about.

Images attached. (two pages)

Cheers!

That's expensive! Has to do that same sort of thing before I joined the army, cost me like £30 I think. It was a long time ago, but definitely didn't cost anywhere near £100.

Yeah I thought it was crazy too. She did just tell me the maximum price though, assuming I were to get every check under the sun. It could actually be £30 too. I just don't know at all until I go and get it done Confused

If you can get it cheaper, cool.

However I wouldn't want to miss out on an opportunity ( I know it's not certain) over a £130.

The situation your in is unfortunate as there is limited time but I'd just pay up and go for it.

It's part 2 work, so not work that's is required to be undertaken as part of an NHS contract. Essentially you are paying for a private consultation, and the dude can charge what he likes.

I have to have a medical for work, normally get it done in-house, but I've had to get it done out-with a few times, and the cost has been in the same £120-£130 bracket, that was for a full health + drugs screen.

If you filled it out yourself I really doubt anyone at the Chinese end will actually check. If they do there's not much can't be overlooked in China for a handful of 100 元 notes

Hmm, so looks like I'll pay the full amount, but yeah that's no big deal if it's gonna get me on this scholarship.

The deadline is so short that basically it's gonna be a race against the clock. I'll be going into uni at 8am sharp to ask if I've been accepted or not. If it's a yes, I have to call my local doctor, pray there's still a timeslot available for a Money midday check-up, then get a train from London to Reading and back all before 4pm, as that's the final deadline for getting the stuff sent off to China (although I reckon that's debatable too since 4pm here is midnight in Beijing).

Fingers crossed!

Cheers for the replies Karma Karma Karma

I know this is probably too late, but my uni has a doctors in it that you are part of if you are a student. Although I think I had to sign up when I joined, could be worth asking your uni doctor if you have one? i'm sure they will do the same checks.

Sounds very strange that they're rushing it so much?

But yeh, the scholarships require health checks to process too. Annoying,
i've done the Chinese one before. It's 40 quid in China to do it, so 130 in the west isn't too steep.

But this charging around to get it done on Monday seems unrealistic. I'd double check that. Although they could just mean get it to China by the morning of the 1st I guess.

Meh, anyway, good luck. I look forward to teaching you naughty things. The Chinese for fuck buddy is 炮友, just incase that comes in handy Laughing

Uni doctor is now closed for a good few weeks! Plus I failed anyway by not signing up as soon as I started. My doctor is some random guy in a village near Reading.

And - side note, mini rant:

Why do I need to get my NHS number and register with a new surgery every time I move house?

I mean seriously, we're supposed to be some kind of modern society, yet it's still impossible to rock up to a random NHS clinic and see a doctor until you've 'registered' and got your name onto their personal system.

Why isn't there one huge national database yet???

Yeah the deadline is stupidly tight. My chances of being accepted are pretty high, the only massive problem is the fact that I need to get all this shit sorted before Monday afternoon.

If all goes well, I look forward to learning many things from you!

Ha, not sure I have many things, but hopefully a few.

Any idea of destination?? Are you starting as complete beginner or what?

Lots of students on scholarship here, most end up teaching for pocket money (or decent wage) anyway. So don't forget that 'perk'. But, of course, unless you immerse yourself fully you won't progress that quickly.

I'm desperately going to spend the next 3 months studying/practising to get the basic enough level to refuse to speak English once I hit Taiwan. For 5 months. Maybe less if the misses continues whinging about it, but at least 3.

Got to immerse.

Oh, and try to avoid using Pinyin too much. It is not your friend.

Haha sorry, I was drunk as hell when I wrote that and couldn't be bothered to think of a way to change it so I sounded like less of a childishly keen puppy.

I don't know where I might end up. The application form allows three preferences for choice of uni but so far I haven't chosen any at all. Got any idea which ones might be best? I was thinking it might be more fun to choose a totally outback place where there are less/no international people so I'd be way more immersed and would also hopefully learn the language far more quickly.

All just waiting and hoping for now anyway though. It all rests on how everything turns out on Monday morning...

I would also aim to be refusing to speak English as soon as possible. I was really slack before, for example when I was in Korea. I must have spent a total of at least 6 months or more there but there was always too much English around me to properly learn Korean, if only I'd been a bit more stubborn and pushed myself to do it.

Depends on your ability to withstand awkwardness. If noone there can translate, then everyone is delighted you are making the effort.

Sometimes though, the bastards unveil an annoying 5 year old to translate or something, and then the fun begins.

I just got back from a 1 year anniversary dinner (from the date I first landed in China) with the gf's parents. I have studied, done things on my own, and had one years gentle rosetta stone etc study in to the language before I arrived. This last month I have had a couple of friends who don't really speak English (one, not at all), which has really tied it together a bit.
Today was the first time where we've managed to have a half-way adult conversation without massive amounts of pain and suffering.

... and it still involved a lot of booze.

Point is, be prepared to be 'weird' if you want to use Chinese. Best trick I've seen, from a guy who can now speak really good Chinese after only a couple of years... keep dating girls with zero English.

If I was single, I would be smashing through them. I'd even teach them beginner's English etc. Fuck it.

As for locations, avoid the big cities. So much, so hard. Just, no. Try to avoid the really hot places. Also, try to stay in a dorm with the Chinese, then try not to get hooked playing shitty online pc games Laughing

To be honest 135 quid isn't much really if its a fairly comprehensive check, its pricey, but they usually are unfortunantely - you're basically 'buying' their time as is not a standard GP appointment. You can easily pay well into the hundreds, even near to a grand for really comprehensive or so they say Rolling Eyes health checks with entirely private clinics.

You shouldn't need your NHS number to register - they may well ask for it but its not required many people don't have a clue what their NHS number is or how to get it. Basic personal details and potentially proof of indentiy are the only essentials that could be demanded by them to register and recieve treatment - probably just the person on the counter dealing with new applicants being derp Laughing

Because of the Daily Mail largely and people who are scared of their personal details being shared.
"care.data" is the answer, but it has been delayed again by scare mongering.

Re: cost of the medical check, Swampy is correct, it's non-core activity which means the GP can charge whatever they like. They'll have costs associated with it if they are sending off samples for testing (Pathology costs vary across the country wildly).

Most of all: good luck Thumbs Up

In a perfect society it would be the answer but when you have an NHS that can't sign up to a simple IL2 agreement (Public Services Network) because it can't assure it's data to that level, then maybe a wee bit of caution is appropriate. Wink

My Doctor charged me £70 just to sign my prefilled medical questionnaire, that's without any kind of examination.

*Disclaimer* I'm not an information / networks geek, I'm an end user so can only see where there are massive benefits to be had.

I've heard some rumblings about IL2, my understanding is that technically, it's mostly independent practitioners (GPs) who are unable to meet the requirements. They have their own archaic computer systems which are costly to replace and don't speak to one another. Sadly, all the funding from CfH which supported GPs to replace systems was pulled by the current government.

Health data is, and always will be, very emotive, personal and private which means it needs to be protected more. However, we will happily let Tesco know where we've been in the country and what we buy every week... and let them do whatever they want with the data (including selling it if they so wished). Neutral

Update!

So the cost was £80.

He even touched my balls Shocked . But at least I learned something. The 'cough' test is to test for a hernia in the lower abdomen, which is caused by the fact that the testicles and kidneys form from the same cells, so when the foetus is developing the testicles slowly move from the kidney area to outside of the body, leaving a small channel all the way down, and through this channel your intestines can sometimes come out a little bit, and by coughing it causes the intestines to temporarily push out a bit further. So the cough test checks for this.

And, good news, the uni made me a firm choice for the scholarship. So it's all being sent off and now we just need to wait for a response from the embassy (which could take ages).

It's looking very likely I'll be a resident of China for a year! How unexpected! Cool
