i've got this mate who has a rs125 gp-1 and he reckons it is some sort of limited edition which was deristricted, had a bigger carb on and has the same sort of power as a 180cc from new and he reckons he's had 130+mph out of it! Is this true or not because i cant see a 125 being able to reach more then 110mph never mind 130+? Confused

I had an RS125 replica and that managed 100mph regularly, (not just down hill either!)

Not sure about one doing 130mph unless it was kitted out will full factory parts, therefore probably costing around the £100,000 mark?!

At the VERY top end I'd expect even a tuned RS to just touch 105-110, so him saying it does 130 is complete crap.

Are you sure he isn't talking about or thinking about an RS250?

130 is about the speed of the 125 GP bikes.
RS's are known to do 100-110 fully derestricted.

Unless he's dropped a Rotax 257 lump in it, then its very special, but thats just unlikely as those lumps are pretty rare to come by and just a little expensive to buy brand new.

A stock but full power RS will do a true 98mph (One of the bike mags tested it) but it has an indicated 110mph or more sometimes.

130mph? Brilliant! Thumbs Up Laughing

130mph IS possible, but the thing would have to be stripped down and rebuilt every 100 miles, and would have to come with a team of engineers to calibrate the thing according the the humidity and air pressure at the time. Laughing

Stardard RS125, desrestricted gets just over 100 with a long run up. The speedo is likely to say more, but its lying.

130mph is about the top speed of an RS250. You'd have to be doing something pretty damn magical witht he thing to get its top speed up to the same as something with twice the capacity and twice the number of cylinders.

Amen Brother! Smile

The speedos of bikes not designed to go over 100mph often wildly over read when approaching that speed.

So no, your mate is either mistaken or lying! Smile

Hi

Top speed of an RS125 (early one with the larger carb, etc) is 100mph, give or take 1~2mph. They will indicate a far higher top speed (I have had mine round to an indicated 115mph, realistically probably 105mph), with an indicated 100mph coming up quite easily.

There was an SP version of the RS125. The engine on these was the same as the normal ones (same part number for the barrel), but they had no starter motor (kickstart instead), had adjustable suspension, light weight wheels (Marchesini I think) and an oil catch bottle. Top speed is not likely to be any different. These are fairly rare and were mainly aimed at race use.

On standard gearing 130mph would be around 13000rpm in top gear, at which point it would probably have done a good impression of a hand grenade. Raise the gearing and it would be a pig to get off the line (they are already quite high geared which makes quiet hill starts a pain). Also (going on the basis of other similar sized bikes) 130mph would probably need about 50hp at the wheel, over 20hp more than an early RS with the larger carb manages.

All the best

Keith

If it is going 130mph, it must have more than 3 powerbands in each gear, and i bet it has go faster stripes. Laughing

My RS will go just over 100, not much faster than that, not when its hauling my fat ass anyways Laughing

I never got more than 97MPH indicated out of mine, although a mates Mito would read 105MPH at the same speed...

I did actually adjust the gearing on mine, Which should had given a higher top speed (Garage ordered the wrong sprocket and I couldnt be arsed to wait), Instead of 97MPH @ 12,000PM, It would do 97MPH @ 11,000RPM Sad (Revs may had been different, I cant remember the exact ones now)

If I hear anyone mention a RS125 with a K&N Filter/Race exhuast saying they have done anything over 110MPH I generally just laugh because it's bullshit.

To show you how much they vary (well, the speedo reading varies), mine managed an indicated 97mph with a pillion on level ground.

That is the earlier one (different speedo and large carb), but is 100% standard.

Only thing to remember is that the speedos are little more accurate than a random number generator.

All the best

Keith

On my 2003 RS125 I saw an indicated speed of somewhere around 105 to 110 mph. This was on a long level straight and involved caning the bike to within an inch of its life. I only ever had it to this kind of speed the once, just to see how fast it would go. How far away the indicated speed was from the actual speed I don't know.
