My textiles that is.
I really can't complain considering the cost, but my first set of textiles are starting to leak.
My "Black" jacket is still a perfect fit and does everything I expected of it, however after prolonged exposure to rain my shoulders do start to get damp. Almost made the two year mark.
My "Black" trousers however, were always karp. The waterproofing on the first set gave up just after the 1 year mark.
Ghostbikes.com kindly upgrading me to a modern pair at no extra cost after I raised this with them (Thanks GB).
However the replacement set faired even worse, with the leg zips snapping off and the waterproofing being non existent the last month or so. In a downpour my jacket would hold off the worst of it, yet the trousers might as well be made from tissue paper.
So should I attempt to repairing the waterproofing, with sprays and the such?
Or should I start looking around to find new gear?
I'm reluctant to simply buy new gear for two reasons. Firstly my jacket isn't too bad but replacing the trousers would result in losing the ability to zip them together.
Secondly my forcefield back protector in my jacket would almost definitely not be transferable to another jacket.
So come on and let me know ...
Should they stay or should they go?

Use a cheap tent and clothing water proofer i got a spray for around 8 quid and i just douse down the leaky bits now and again which does the trick, seems a shame to throw them away without at least trying the sprays!! ____________________ Fuelly My Z1000SX

decathlon sports do a half decent over trouser for £10, small enough to go in a pocket, taped seams. and I've worn them in a few downpours. big enough zips on the bottoms to go over boots too. ____________________ it is impossible to lick your own elbow...

my first textile jacket (from ghost bikes incidentally) was not waterproof despite being advertised as such, nikwax made it shower proof but ended up wearing a cycling waterproof (aldi) over it
Cycling waterproofs are longer at the back to keep you covered when you're in a riding position
the trousers would gradually leak after a month or two and so would get washed and nikwaxed every so often,
Been using some heingerrike shelter jacket over winter and trousers which felt as though they were starting to let a bit in so they've had the same treatment. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

Cheers for all the replies guys ... seriously release the Kraken
I like the idea of waterproof over clothing, but it seems like more hassle carrying it around. With Waterproof textiles you are ready for whatever the weather throws at you. Having to stop and put on waterproofs over gear seems daft when you can have an item of clothing that does it all.
I don't currently commute so I can avoid the rain more often than others. On the flip side, I'm not going to put of a ride just because rain clouds are hovering.
My current textiles are great ... provided there is NO rain, something I cannot guarantee living in Cornwall
I'll Google around for waterproof sprays ect, worth a shout
Thanks !

Hey,
When my textile jacket started leaking more than usual i started wearing my Fluorescent work jacket and Trousers. Not only were they almost 100% waterproof they were also a hell of a lot warmer.
Just recently we were issued with an Elka Extreme weather jacket and trousers. I will never buy 'proper' motorbike textiles again. I realise they don't offer any impact/abrasion protection however they are warm and 100% waterproof.....even better work will replace them when they wear out
For boots i now use Riggers. Again much more comfortable than motorcycle boots and also much more waterproof! They also have the added benefit of steel toe caps just in case you feel the need to vent your frustrations on some stupid car drivers door
All this non motorcycle clothing is also a lot cheaper.
Cheers,
Shaun R. |

Those look good. I've just ordered Elka Xtreme one-piece overall to wear on top of my leathers when I go touring over Easter. We'll see how they work out.

My textile suit is warm, 100% waterproof, breathable, quick to dry, and has the usual cordura with armacor elbows and knees etc. However RRP is over £1k (goretex proshell - I paid about £400 net buying discounted / discontinued lines). A high price to pay if crashed in. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

To update, they worked very well. Minimal flapping at 80+ on the motorways, stayed waterproof. Worn over a leather 2-piece, didn't have to take anything off to get them on. Not a long term test yet though. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4
