It was a warm summer's evening in ancient Greece. Honda had just perfected the Benley.

But that's tl;dr as may be.

In the early olden days of my biking, I switched between open and full face lids. Truth to tell, I preferred the open face. More vision, lighter, and let's talk risk compensation: I did feel more vulnerable in it, and so rode more carefully.

Then, one chilly winter's morn, I face planted on black ice, fortunately wearing the full face, and that's the last time I wore the open lid.

But with my regression to pottering around in the summer, I would like to explore the options for a helmet with the benefits of an open face but some sort of chin protection. As webbikeworld notes, it's a "why didn't I think of that?" idea.

I'm baffled as to why nobody else has done it.

Does seem a missed-opportunity for helmet sales. Makes me tinfoil-hat suspicious... but probably not justified.

Would be interested to wear one on a ride with the visor up/down to compare it to a full-face - even with the visor down i'm wondering if the way a full-front visor deflects wind might be noisy/uncomortable compared to a standard full-face helmet with the chin section. Seems a ridiculous expensive for so many helmet manufacturers to of absorbed making flip-face helmets, with their mechanisms and parts if it could of all been avoided with a simple metal ring on the chin area Shocked

Although, if its safe enough for Buzz n' co, its surely safe enough for us Thinking

How many of them do they sell?

I would imagine that anyone who choses to buy an open face these days and is prepared to spend a sizeable wad on it, would be after a certain look, probably in an authentic retro stylee.

If I were buying an open face, I'd want it to look like a proper Bell Jet.

In any case, when I read something like "snap in chin guard", I also think snap out chin guard, ie not worth the candle and certainly not worth Schuberth gimmick prices.

Even after my barrier incident I'm still looking for the right open faced helmet. That's if I'm fully honest.

If you want the advantages and disadvantages of an open faced helmet just go for a simple one, we all judge risk every time we hop the leg over the bike. It's just adding to that risk.

What teffers has to say actually has some sense wear protection to ride not to crash.

Not sure what it's like to wear but these seem kinda in the ball park of what you are after.

This here shark helmet. The RAW?

Tried this on in j&s a few weeks ago. The face chin bit is flexible and not going to help in a high speed face to curb incident. Its more to keep bugs out if the teeth. Its also detachable and when I tried the helmet on it felt fantastic. Really nice comfy helmet!

At that price, not many.

At £50, it might be a different story.

Agreed.

I am of course going to go out to the garage, dust off my Nitro retro, and start rifling through my bar stock. Thinking

Dusted.

Nothing suitable, so I bought some hollow aluminium tube.

£290? I could knock one up in my garage...
https://i58.tinypic.com/2vt13jo.jpg

I will of course double-die the first time I put it on. That's a given.

[UPDATE] For some inexplicable reason, I did not die. Eh?

I did find out that because it stiffens up the cheek pieces, and it was a bit more of a struggle getting the lid off over my flawless ears. Still going to wear it though. Folded arms

You saw it here first folks, the World's first prototype! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
I guess the big question now is "does it work?" Does it provide protection in the event of face-planting into the road?

Thinking Depending on how I landed, I'd be concerned that the bar could dig in to the ground and snap my neck tbh.

How did you actually fasten it on Roger did you drill into the casing and then put screws through or just hammer it in with nails Thinking intrigued as I would of expected anything penetrating it to crack the surrounding area but it appears to look okay Razz

I haven't been interested in open face helmets recently because frankly, there are now hipsters all over the internet doing them to death and manufacturers like Shark are totally killing it with full face designs nowadays, I mean look at this beaut:

https://www.motolegends.com/Images/Products/XLarge_Images/SRK712_1.jpg

Most modern open faces are fucking massive too thanks to all the safety regs they now have to meet, case in point, the MOMO Fighter, looks amazing until you put it on and realise it's actually 1.5 inches thick all round and makes your head look like a huge gumball. I am so totally certain they used models with the largest head sizes per shell size to make it look smaller in the ads!

The older open face helmets had much thinner linings and therefore looked more proportional.

You could always try to find an old MX helmet like the Bell Moto Star, which is basically an old-school open face that decided to grow out it's beard.

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ao3uUOVmQo8/SXud8uU40KI/AAAAAAAALKg/7uGh-sAqHso/s400/bell_motostar_wh_1.jpg

Some manufacturers now are jumping on the hipster bandwagon and making retro full face lids. Check out the Biltwell Gringo, Premier Trophy and Bell Bullitt, the latter of which has a really thin chin bar and all-important retro chrome detailing.

https://images0.revzilla.com/product_images/0075/8590/bell_bullitt_helmet_detail.jpg

And if you want a Shark RAW on a budget, get some cheap open face and an EMGO MX goggle/mask combo.

Jebus, put it in a room with this:

And they'll give birth to a full face helmet, or something Laughing

I've scientifically[1] determined that the impulse required to deform hollow aluminium tube and then dislodge 6 x 4mm pop rivets is slightly less than to take my head off my spine.

Bad things could happen. Then again, bad things might not happen, or worse things could happen without it. At least I'll leave a good[2] looking corpse.

Nice, but another £300 lid.

Given the plethora of other designs coming out of China, it seems to be a notably unfilled niche at the budget end.

Got a Nexx x60 sand last month.

https://scooter-wear.com/image/cache/data/Momo/NEXX-X60-VISIONPLUS-DESERT-1000x1000.jpg

They do a large range of colour schemes from £60-£90.

Lightweight lovely little city helmet Thumbs Up I no longer have to take glasses off every time i take off and put on helmet, and in the last month, nobodys asked me to take it off anywhere. Not in Morrisons, Texaco garages, or even shopping centres.
