Gear Lever Oil Seal Leak

Hi , I have an oil leak and I think the seal needs replacing, there cheap enough and it looks simple enough so I am going to change it anyway.
This may sound a bit thick but if I dont need to I d prefer not to and that is do I need to drain the oil first?

Can you gently lay it over on it's side so the gear shaft is facing up?

If the shaft sits above the oil level on the sight glass, then you should be able to change the seal without dropping the oil.

If not, drop the oil.

Whatever you do, get the shaft good and clean before changing the seal - you don't want to force the crap from the shaft into the engine when you slide the new seal hole.

Sprocket cover, gear linkage off.
Clean area until spotless.
Lean bike over onto wall.
Self tapper or seal pick old seal out.
Clean up any debris.
Lube and insert new seal.
Refit ancillaries.
Test ride and recheck seal.

Took nearly as long to type as to do !

Make sure it's the gear lever bush first and it isn't the gunge/oil coming down from the front sprocket, you wouldn't be the first to find oil and think it's a seal. Clean the area fully then see what happens to make sure.

Just had a bit of clean and I am waiting to see where the oil comes from. The oil I cleaned off was black where the oil in the tank is clean?

Where there does not seem to be a leak from the seal, I recently fitted a scotoiler maybe its something to do with that

Heh, yes, likely just fling from the sprocket then. Good call, that man.

If it turns out that it is the shifter seal, I just leaned my GPz305 against a wall, all was well. I used a centre punch to dint the seal, drilled a small pilot hole, self tapping screw, withdraw.

I'd absolutely ruled out fling from the chain.

Well I cleaned it all up and left it over night and there is no oil so it must be from the chain. Seems a bit excessive to have drops of oil under the bike after a ride but the chain looks and feels great oh well lol

Is the flow set correctly? about a drop a minute from memory - if its more you could be getting some excessive fling.

Yea its on the slowest setting and its about 2 drops a minute, I am also using the red oil which I believe is thicker than the blue

Very common problem. The oil, grease and gunge from the chain gets flung off around the front sprocket where it is making the tightest turn on the chain run, and collects as greasy sludge in the area. When the bike is standing after the ride the heat from the engine melts the gunk, and you get drips.

The gunk does quite a good job of stopping any oil seals in the area from drying out and leaking, so I tend to ignore it and put up with the drip.

Oh right well I would never have guessed that lol.
I have just had a new chain sprockets and the oiler fitted when it started happening so it just goes to show how dry my old chain was I only lubed it a few times in about 4000 miles as above DOH lol
