Hi,

After a year or so off bikes due to an accident I'm looking to buy one of these. Want to stay with Kawasaki and get a ZX6R. Wouldn't mind another 97 but they are all such high mileage usually for my liking.

What's the going rate for an 05 £3700 - £4200? Seems an awful lot still for a 8 year or so old bike.

Also looking to go and look at some soon so any tips regarding them mechanically etc?

Not interested in ones with all upgrades. Just a rough figure of a standard one. I'll add the upgrades myself.

Thanks everyone.

£3500 is about the going rate for a private sale

I've got an 06, which I think comes with a few extras over the 05, such as a slipper clutch and revised fuel mapping.

Great bikes. One slightly weak point is the Tokiko brakes. Even after a rebuild and bleed, they still feel a little dull. You can strait swap them with the 07+ Nissin mono-blocs which are so much better.

I read a few instances of the cam chain getting noisy because the tensioner spring is a little weak. On tick over they can be a little rattly until the tensioner clicks on to the next stepping. Mine however is fine, but some people swap to a manual cam chain tensioner.

Not really aware of much else, they seem pretty solid built bikes. The finish is also great.

I picked mine up with 2k miles for £3400.

Brilliant bikes Thumbs Up for the money especially. Ridden a few newer and other similar age sports and prefer this to many (not just as its my bike Razz). Average private now probably 3.5k. Can get them for as low as 3k if youre very lucky, but maybe quick sales for a reason so id be cautious.

Ive gone from 1k to 23k on mine with 0 problems after minimal maintenance and tbh a fair bit of neglect and its only recently got a couple of issues, but may well just need throttles syncing tbh. The CCT can be a PITA... Lot of people recommend using manual ones (APE are popular). Mines noisey as hell at the moment, getting valves/CCT looked at tomorrow as it happens.

Generally as with a lot of kwaks theyre quite noisey engine wise with various ticks n taps but you get used to it. I get 45mpg average, upto 50+ on rare occasions Shocked Not much bad to say about it really, the stock tokicos are a bit renowned for seizing up but keep on top of cleaning and it should be fine - otherwise put some nissins on it Thumbs Up

05s have the slipper clutch too Razz Not sure about the fuel mapping. AFAIK the only difference is the stock screen was adjusted for the 06. Wouldnt suprise me as my 05s stock screen was as useful as a piece of newspaper Rolling Eyes

Forgot to add on my last post, stock they run 180/55 and 120/65 tyres. The /65 on the front makes finding good deals particularly on sets quite difficult, a lot of people inc myself switch to 120/70s.

They seem to hold their value fairly well too, i paid 4k for mine 3 and a half years ago.

I paid £3500 last year for mine to give you some idea. Fantastic bike and I don't think the brakes are bad.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone.

Yes I was planning to put some nissins on the bike anyway as I've heard they are better for the bike than stock.

Thanks.

There's nothing wrong with the brakes on the 05 bikes. I remember some brake judder on the OEM pads on track but switch to another brand, which I forget, seemed to fix it.

Im happy with the stocks personally. I dont track the bike but on the road even using fairly cheap pads ive never felt they lacked really. Id give them a good try first before buying the nissins.

Yes I'll be sure to try the bike first. It would be an upgrade I'd like to do though. Was looking last night and on some sites 05 and 06 there isn't an awful lot in price difference.

How did you manage to get one for £1500? Must of had stupidly Hugh mileage or something surely?

Thanks everyone.

I don't think 19k is huge mileage.

After a bit of thinking, I've decided I'll go a bit older and get an 03 even possibly a 97. Not a fan of the 02 Ninjas. More so due to money. As I'm purchasing a car in the next few months.

If I'm correct its the B1H 636? From 03? Any known problems on these? May have a viewing on one this week possibly. Around 18k on the clock for around £2750?

Thanks.

Yeah many seem to be put on ebay daily.

Think I just prefer the 03 as opposed to the 06/07 after searching for the last week or so.

Significant price difference in some cases also but not all.

Thanks everyone.

Well I've found one and going to view it most probably. 05. 15k on clock. Asking for around 2850 mark.

Seems not that bad.

Thanks.

Silver fella.

Either that or I'll go back to a 97 like my last one. Gives me extra money for some new boots.

Thanks.

Well the silver bike had gone when I phoned the seller.

Upon more looking on eBay etc. See a fair few 98 g2's? With the bulkier front end which I really like. Like the 97 ninja.

Also seeing the 01 or 02 J model? 636. Any noticeable differences between the G and J? Mainly engine and so on wise.

Thanks.

Troys had both, if you PM him he can probably give you a good idea what they're like in comparison.

Considering he got his J in really good condition with only a couple 1000 more miles on the clock than mine for about half the cost, i'd be very tempted to go for one. Kind of wish I had originally in heinsight, could of bought another bike with the spare cash Shocked

I thought the 05/06s were quite bulky, but put next to the J1 it looks tiny Laughing

Looked at some 05/06s last year but job situation put paid to that idea.

Great looking bikes but I couldn't get a test ride.

My job situation's improved and I'll be back in the market for one of them later this year. Definitely appeal to me.
