The CBF saga continues on BCF.
Last year the misses bought a CBF 125, rust started to set in.
Took it into local Honda dealer who so far are being good so no issues there.

So the warranty claim is
Top and bottom yokes
Head bearings have collapsed
Exhaust rotten
Exhaust cover
Head stem rotten
Frame rotten
Engine mounts rotten
Swing arm rotten
Centre stand pivot gone
Heel plates rotten
Gear lever rotten
Brake lever rotten
Bar clamps tarnished
Honda top box rack rotten
Petrol tank rotten
Rear shocks rotten.

So the bike, its just hit 2 years old and has done a whopping 1500 miles, it is kept in a garage, not ridden in the rain, never dropped, full Honda service history.

Honda have thus far rejected the claim due to
" fair wear and tear on a 2 year old bike"
It has done 1500 miles.

Just been onto Honda customer relations to submit a complaint, this should be fun.

Don't see what the big deal is, your CBF has stood up well in comparison to modern build quality Laughing

If that is "wear and tear" on a 1500 mile, 2 year old bike, I dread to think what they consider to be "manufacturing defect" Shocked

I never understand Honda TBH.

In that they always build up a great reputation, then destroy it and spend the next decade trying to repair it costing more, considerably more than the bumper profits they made from cashing in on their rep.

1950s, shoddy Harley copies, trashed their rep, Cub50 saved their bacon.

It took them 2 decades to get any sort of reputation back.

They then ruin it with the chocolate cam drive VF series.

They spend the next 10 years selling VFRs at a loss to get their rep back, and now they ruin it again.

It's great classroom material for economics classes... but seems a basket case company!

Errrr, my 1994 Honda CB500 looks like it has corrosion than that listed. Different build era I suppose, Different quality control and different company ethos back then?

I am looking forward to this.

Definitely says something that two threads have appeared about problems with CBFs in 3 days.

Why would they do anything until sales are floundering?

Honda are still by far the biggest volume seller in the UK, the CBF125 is almost always the #1 125 and usually the #1 seller unless there's a new GS out, and the reviews (initial rides or starry eyed first owners) are still generally positive.

It's an Indian bike made for the Asian bowl-of-rice markets, and it's wildly optimistic to expect anything better from it.

If my Wapanese is up to scratch Honda aren't selling it in Japan which should tell you everything you need to know.

Looks like the accountants have taken over at Honda. Short term gains, then those responsible, with their 'spun' CVs, move on and upwards before everything goes belly up. You see it in nearly every profession as the sociopaths are more likely to rise to the top.

Top quality build quality and good no quibble customer service is rare nowadays.

Will upload some more pictures later.

So far the garage have been good, said they wont proceed with doing any work on it as they only offered a brake and clutch lever.

It does take the piss though, I would love to meet the guy who wants to stand their and tell me "this is fair wear and tear on a 2 year old bike" it is rotten, what happens when I have paid it all off and I am left with a bike worth nothing? There will be no resale value to this back in a year or so, I doubt the tank would still be holding petrol in a year.

Complete pisstake, it has only done 1500 miles, the only moisture it gets is from washing, granted it could have done with a better wash before it went in, but I feared if I washed it by the time they got around to doing it there would just be a seat, and some bits of plastic left. Laughing

As it stands though, no courtesy bike as they don't have a 125 courtesy bike, bike can't be ridden as here are the head bearings

Sound lovely don't they

Given the recent(ish) corrosion incidents that are allegedly down to wear and tear/normal use are you sure Honda aren't a wholly owned subsidiary of Victory Motorcycles? Wink

If Honda are saying fair wear and tear after 2 years what life expectancy or mean time before failure are they putting on those machines?

My mate had an 09 cbf years ago and went through 2 exhausts (rust) and something was wrong with the gearbox as it kept slipping into neutral, I thought it was him being a n00b until I had a go. All issues fixed under warranty luckily. Don't remember rust being an issue elsewhere on his and it was ridden all year round and never washed. Seems like the newer ones are getting worse.

It's the fair wear and tear after 1500 miles, now I would accept that if perhaps the bike was ridden from here to Monaco via the sea, but it would be somewhat difficult to ride the bike on the sea bed, for starters I would need a big fuck off snorkel, and refuelling would be a challenge

Try and get Charley Boorman or Guy Martin involved, sounds like a project they'd like to be involved with to keep their faces on TV.

Plus expenses paid trip to Monaco. Who can say no? Wink

You’re exaggerating a tad. That’s hardly “rotten”. It’s purely cosmetic at this stage, and will remain so for many years at that rate of deterioration.

Of course everyone wants perfection, but you just won’t get that when you pay roughly a month’s wages/salary for a complete, fully functional, brand new motorcycle. The everlasting motorcycles of the glorious past cost much more, so of course they used better materials and were better made.

That it’s made in India is not important. Honda presumably chose India because it thought it could make the best machine there, for the target cost – bearing in mind loads of them are sold in India, too (for about 600 quid new!).

Stop whinging on here and go read the sale of goods act. It states that the goods should be fit for purpose and last a reasonable amount of time.

Get in touch with honda and explain that you are versed in uk consumer law and intend to chase them through the courts. You have given them an opportunity to rectify the problem but they are refusing.

That's if you can confidently say the issues are not fair wear and tear.

The bit of rust on the bike is poor quality but you can remedy it yourself quite easily and before it gets any worse. The head bearing should last more that 1500 miles and they should rectify that without question and I would expect the dealer to touch the paint up as a matter of courtesy I know I would if I had a bike in and there were mechanical issues!

Agreed.

LessIsMore wrote:

Not agreed.

My understanding is that it's an HMSI designed machine primarily for the Asian markets. Since it's neither made nor sold in Japan, Honda corporate will be less personally invested in it.

My experience of Indian outsourcing is that there is a problem. They can do good work to secure a deal, but the moment there's a contract signed, the cost cutting, slacking and personal graft kicks in big style.

Yeah, I think you need to go look up the definition of 'rotten' and then go back and reword your description accordingly. Laughing Laughing Laughing

To be fair in the light those pictures are taken you dont see the full extent of it, will get the better photos uploaded that shows the full extent.

And after 1500 miles that is far more rust than my 14 year old abused Ducati which gets used all year around and rarely washed
