Well, not quite, but it is looking like I might lose my licence after not having it that long

My own fault, overtook a silver Audi on the wrong side of an island, turned out to be an unmarked traffic officer Sad Embarassed

He reported me for driving without due care, apparently it goes to the force's central ticket office and they decide what my punishment is. He did say I might get offered a course, but I dunno.

How fucked am I likely to be on a scale of "lucky bastard" to "pass the lube, please?"

Wrong siding a roundabout is pretty bad, you're lucky it's not dangerous driving to be honest. Not much you can really do other than wait and see. If it's not a course but 6 points it might be worth going for court and begging to keep your licence, but magistrates are advised not to reduce points just to get around the New Drivers Act when sentencing, so you'd need something pretty special to get away with it.

Hi, Mumsnet.

It's likely to be 3 points, don't fret until you get the bribe offer through.

A quick googlage hints that this contavention is down to the Council to enforce. Do some more digging.

Could be why he has gone for a due care & attention things as opposed to a failure to adhere to sign type contravention.

My advice? Don't just suck it up. Thumbs Up

some areas of the country 'island' is used to refer to roundabout

OP, can you clarify what you were the wrong side of please?

https://www.ritherdon.co.uk/images/pictures/product-images/poletech-products/demountable-traffic-island-new-3-(page-picture-large).jpg or similar

https://www.mini-roundabout.com/images/Chippenham1.jpg

If the latter you'll need to lube up,

Oh, I sees.

Otherwise, a 'normal' island is a non endorsable offence. see https://www.met.police.uk/foi/pdfs/disclosure_2011/january/2011010002633.pdf code 334.

An 'abnormal' island is just asking for trouble. I can't belive OP would be that stoopid - would he?

Down the RHS of the road on the wrong side of an island in presumably stationary traffic full of folk texting "STUCK IN TRAFIC JUST GUNNA DO A U TURN WIVOUT LOOKING LOL!!!"?

Verrrry interesting find. I'd blithely assumed that ignoring a mandatory direction sign would be endorsable. Thinking

Failing to stop for a constable is non-endorsable! Party on!

Unfortunately, driving without due care IS endorseable, suitably vague and is what he's been reported for. Passing on the wrong side of a traffic island (assuming it has a "keep left" sign) is fairly likely to fail the legal test which is as follows: Within a balance of probability, did the standard of driving driving fall below the standard expected of a competent and careful driver?

My brother got a £30 FPN for "failure to comply with a traffic sign" for straightlining a mini roundabout at 2am on a deserted road. Copper had sat there all night booking people for it. Also a vet, he has added £30 to his bill for attending every traffic accident the police have called him out to in the four years since it happened.

I was always under the impression a mini roundabout only had to be treated as a roundabout junction and not actually a 'you must go around the stupidly placed dot at walking pace'

Highway Code: Roundabouts (184-190)

Rule: 188
"Mini-roundabouts. Approach these in the same way as normal roundabouts. All vehicles MUST pass round the central markings except large vehicles which are physically incapable of doing so. Remember, there is less space to manoeuvre and less time to signal. Avoid making U-turns at mini-roundabouts. Beware of others doing this."

Except I was told, I think during bikesafe, maybe DAS I forget, that due to these being slippery when wet, and so dangerous for bikes, just to get round however you can. Almost treat like a junction.

I know there's one in town where to turn right properly you virtually have to do a U turn as it's offset from the junction. It's only there to try and slow traffic.

It seems, the rule used to be just treat as a junction but has been revised to make you go around.
