But what to do?

Europe or UK?

Personally I'd like to do the nurburgring then down into Italy abd back through Switzerland and France, but is this achivable within a week?

This is also only potential at the minute. Depends what happens with the missus hols

It is possible but you will be riding all week, you can do Italy in 12hrs or so from calais if you don't mind just stopping for fuel and a leak but it isn't fun.

Ideally, depending on where in italy you want to go, get to the ring on day 1, day 2 at the ring, day 3 getting to italy, day 4 in italy, day 5 going to swiss, day 6 in swiss, day getting back. Not really much of a holiday but if this is what you want, go for it.

But, the first question. UK or Europe? I'd go for europe every time.

There are many reasons but the lack of traffic, better roads, less twats per mile and being able to pull up at a hotel and be welcomed with a room for £30 - £40 instead of the UK 'OMG, A BIKER, RUN' type reception you get in the UK along with the £80 a night travel lodge rip offs

Is it more achievable to go Italy > Monaco > bilbao/santander and back on the ferry?

I'd say slightly less so.

The ferry is about 24hrs, so that is a day lost and monaco to bilbao isn't really much off getting back to calais.

If you live the portsmouth side of things it could work out well but if oop north or london way, back on the tunnel would be my choice

London way. The mileage count is sat at 2,100 miles. So 300 miles a day for 7 days. Phew. May have to re-think. Scandinavia any good?

I've never been, could do Nordkapp if it's a bit more manageable.

Calais - Ardenne. Luxembourg. Eifel. Pfalzwald. Black Forest-North end. Black Forest-south end. (a dip into Switzerland) Vosges. Southern Ardenne and back to Calais

and thats your week.

bear in mind - if you really do want to ride the Nurburgring and intend being there during the week - the tourist rides tend to be at the end of the day 17:30-19:30

Sooner or later opinions fade and the name on the tank matters not. I think that happens somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear. Enjoy the ride... everything else takes care of itself.

It won't open until the end of May at the earliest.

The Alps are quite doable comfortably in a week.

Take 2 overnight stops there and back on scenic roads giving you 3 nights, 2 days to explore an area. You could get there quicker on motorways. Doing it in one is possible but very hard going. 1 overnight stop will also involve a lot of motorway riding but give you 2 more days down there. The downside of motorway riding over that distance is that you are very likely to square your tyre off.

The High Passes will not be open but just about everything else will be road wise. It is considered out of season for anything other than Biking at that time so you will find many hotels and restaurants closed for maintenance and staff holidays.

An alternative would be to fly to somewhere like Innsbruck or Munich and stay here: https://www.hotel-enzian.com

Season opening is 30th April. A large pool of all the current BMW range for about 45 euro per day and a good deal on accommodation. Lovely place, good food and there will be many other Bikers there. Daily Guided Tours during the opening BMW Test Weeks will ensure you get to see the best of what is open in the area. No more expensive than taking your own bike in real terms but gives you more time in The Alps.

You could even take a blatt down to us for a few days Smile

Just a word of warning. Every year after spring arrives in The Alps there is a brief return of real winter weather for a few days. In Austria it is known as The Ice Man returning reminding people winter is never far away. This can happen any time between April and early June. 2 years ago it lasted for several weeks. Winter never really arrived on the northern side of The Alps this year and it was the mildest for many, many years. Locals here are talking about a very cold May and significant snowfall as a consequence. Only time will tell. Smile
