Planning on going to south Wales tomorrow got a 192 mile (total including return journey planned). So only a small ride, anyway can anyone recommend any scenic places for pictures.

For example I'm after waterfalls/river spots, cool buildings, monuments/statues.

Also if you are in south wales and a guy on a black Gn125, wearing an orange jacket/black leather trousers.. More than likely to be me.

Brecon Beacons would be a good bet for South Wales. I can't give any specifics as I haven't lived there for 13 years and I was only 14 when I left!

Not totally sure its the right place - but on our way upto Snowdonia from Newport we went past somewhere that was a really nice town/surrounding area, was absolutely packed with bikes.

I think it was Rhayader after a quick search.

Lovely looking place I haven't been that far west yet but I'll add it to my list of places.

Ah thank you for the information, not knowing the actual location gives me some getting lost to do, erm I mean exploring. Wink

Think I've mentioned this to you before, but if you get that far west, the A4069 is a great road across the Black Mountains (eastern Brecons). A4067 is a boring one (and sneaky scameras Evil or Very Mad ), so to complete that loop, take the A470 back over, which if I remember correctly, has a food wagon in a layby at the top of the pass (called Superbites - bikes often stop there for refreshments).

If you go north from the A40 instead of south, Rhayader is indeed central for many great roads - you have the Elan Valley there; 3 dams, with reservoirs, viaduct etc, well worth a look.

Llandovery has the West End cafe, a popular bike meeting place. Just north of Llandrindod Wells, at crossing point of the A44 and A483, is Crossgates cafe, another place you get a lot of bikes (just next to the petrol station, east side of the roundabout).

Elan Valley:

@Chickenstrip, this is my trip for tomorrow. Black Mountain road is the road I'm most looking forward to be honest.

Where, specifically? EDIT sorry, now seen the Google map. You turn around and start heading back at a point too far east for me to be able to give you advice, but be careful on the A465, lots of accidents on that road. West End caff in Llandovery Thumbs Up wonder if it's changed since I was last there (1987 I think).

Head for Abergavenny as a starting point. The Oasis cafe in the bus station is a popular spot for bikers. You can pick which direction to ride off in and you will come across a great riding road.

If you do head west towards Llandovery make sure you ride the Black Mountain road as this is where Top Gear and Evo magazine test cars.

G to H is not much fun. H to I to J I don't really know. I tend to try to stay away from the southern edge of the Brecons as much as possible, as it's much more built up generally, but perhaps someone else can advise you on that. I quite often explore between the northern edge of the Brecons, all the way up to Snowdonia, and from Aberystwyth on the coast to the Marches. That's the area for the best roads on the whole.

Anyway, have a good one! Thumbs Up

Double post ahoy....

Also to add, as you come off the M48 bridge and head towards Chepstow, instead of the A466 take the B4235 to Usk, then head to raglan and pick up the B4598 which shadows the A40.

Also the A460 heads of the valleys road is very boring, covered in road works and has SPECS cameras that pick up bikes

The Brecon to Abergavenny road is good but I would divert and do Brecon to Merthyr (or vice versa depending on which way you are going)

That is an awesome road, couple of good cafes along the way, one right by the reservoir and another with a bloody good view.

Couple of old pics from that road:

Either way, its an awesome part of the world and Im licky its on my doorstep - I'm heading that way tomorrow also, so look out for a very tatty red & black R1!!

Don't worry I aim to take it steady and have fun, I'm only doing this route as it seems easy and its not that big for a 125 (for me). Plan on doing euro trips when I pass and get a bigger bike, so need a step up of mileage.

I'm only going the south way as two close relatives are ill and one wants to see a photo of where she was born (mountain ash).

I got stuck in Merthyr on a boiling hot day - it was like fkn groundhog day; kept ending up at the same place and couldn't find my way out, got really hot and bothered, was cursing and swearing before I finally managed to escape Evil or Very Mad
I avoid it like the plague now Laughing

Yeah don't ever go into Merthyr itself, it is a shit hole. I made that mistake looking for a cuppa one day.

Anywhere in the Beacons or surrounding areas (except Merthyr). Also avoid A465 south of Merthyr, average speed cameras. I like the A40 from Brecon to Llandovery and then the A483 to Builth Wells.

All these suggestions are excellent, and top it all off with a trip down to Ogmore (south of Bridgend) to visit the sea and get an ice cream.

On a sunny day, Ogmore-by-Sea has pretty amazing views out to the sea. Just be careful you don't stare too long, or you'll ride off the cliff.

Just make sure to take some bug spray, the spiders grow huge there.
