Injuries working on your motorbike..

Burnt myself good and proper today. Giving my bike an overhaul, including new tyres, throttle cables, and loads of other bits. Whilst undoing the oil drain bolt, I rested my forarm on the header pipe. Didn't do it on purpose of course. .

Have you guys injured yourself yet this year?

I don't think I've ever managed to wash my bike without cutting myself on something Usually its the jubilee clips on the cooling hoses.

I've got a hurty finger from trying to separate a fuel injector plug to fit a Power Commander. It's been three weeks now and it's still very hurty indeed if any sideways pressure is accidentally applied.

Not motorcycling, but burnt the underside of my arm when I put it on top of the exhaust part of the rotovator when kneeling down to unblock it. The part had the words "CAUTION HOT" recessed on the metal so I had a rectangle of burnt skin, with unburnt skin spelling "HOT" - people did take the piss

Hi

Lots of minor cuts and the like. Strangest one was using a dremel to cut around a chewed up crash bung so I could get at the nut to undo it. Disk broke up and flew though the air, landing on my bare are. Where the molten plastic on it happily burnt my skin.

Changed all my exhaust studs earlier as some were bent, let the bike warm up to make sure exhaust wasn't blowing then burn the front of my middle finger on one of the downpipes. The blister is the entire width of my finger and stretches all the way from first to second knuckle.....

Still feel nauseous for some reason and it's at least 5mm high!

For some reason, the rear caliper pad retaining pin (which is an Allen head) on my CBR has a screw-on cover. The photographs and instructions in the Haynes manual neglect to mention that they removed the exhaust silencer and link pipe in order to take unobstructed pictures .. and gain perpendicular access to the screw head.

I decided that removing the exhaust was a big waste of time when all I wanted to do was to replace my brake pads. I could get a screwdriver in at an angle, but had to use a stubby handled flat head, as there wasn't much space to work in. I forgot it was one of the sharpest screwdrivers I own and when it (inevitably) slipped, I stabbed my other hand, which was securing the caliper. I'd have turned the air blue but next-door's kids were playing on the driveway

Suzukis are far easier to work on IME. Should have bought another GSX-R

It's the 'little ones' that hurt the most.

I was doing duel with an M10x180 engine bolt on Wednesday.
It put up a brave and stubborn resistance. The nut came off the end reasonably easily, with the application of enough leverage, but the bolt was a little more entrenched.
"Lift With Your Knees - Gravity is NOT your friend! He only pretends to help, so that he can get you to smash your face on the floor!"
A lesson a mechanics lecturer drummed into us many many many years ago. Lift spanners away from floor, don't lean on them pushing towards it. One my 'friend' Gravity has had to remind me of plenty of times since. So, I grinned when the head of the bolt sheared off... and I didn't fall flat on the floor... No... breaker bar and scaffold pole merely fell on my foot! Ouch.
Oh-Kay, so we have shank left in the hole... find drift and hammer.
Another 'lesson' comes home to roost.
Always look after your hand Tools - Make sure hammer heads are secure. Dress chisels and drifts so that the ends are flat and have no burrs, so that heads don't come flying off, hammers don't slip off what you hit, and you don't end up hammering swarf into your fist
So, I ground my drift, and set about bashing.... the thumb on my left hand, mainly, I think! And STILL bludy bolt didn't budge.
Time to get mechanised on its arse.
Eight hours of drilling and cutting, and then leaning on the thing with a punch in an industrial SDS drill... I won.
The pain of big bruises in feet and hands forgotten.
So I get in the bath, in state of euphoria. Victorious.
I BEAT THE BOLT!
Ouch!
As the grease and grime soaks away...
"Where did THAT nick come from?" a small pin head size cut in a crack on my knuckle... god it stings!
"Eeek!" looks like a paper cut on the inside of my finger. GOD that's sore!
And so it goes on, the list of minor injuries, never felt at the time, mounting up, and each one, not delivering the debilitating 'Oh! Y F*kin B*st'd Sh!tcrunty B*sta'd F*ker!", intense but short-lived pain; No, all these little buggers mount up, and deliver, irritating, annoying "ouch!" pain, over and over and over, for days and days and days!
And they hide.
You think they have gone away. Healed up. But no!
You pick up a jar, or put on a jacket, or nick a chip, and they come back! With a vengeance!
And you never really know how you bludy got them!
Sneaky little bastards they are!

So, yes..I have hurt myself this year.

I hurt myself yesterday, and the day before, and the day before, and, err, pretty much EVERY day! EVERY year!

Had an annoying one yesterday. Went to slide a swing arm bolt home. [Bisto Ah!] Ohhh... that's going in nice! One of those moments you expect something to be a bit awkward, but, no, slides in with just enough stiffness you know its a good fit, nice and smooth.... and... "AW-Y#~~##!" as in the last 1/4 inch, whilst pushing head of bolt, rebate catched thumb nail, bends it back double and cracks it through to the quick! No blood, no bruise, just PAIN! raw, tender, unrelenting pain!

And I do this for FUN?!?!? I mean, why dont I just take the car? I dont NEED a motorbike. Less to wrestle with rusty nuts and bolts? WHY do I do this again?

Ah yes! That was it. No Pain No Gain. If it didn't hurt. If it was 'easy', then victory would be so less gloriouse!

Pain? Ha! Ask that M10x180 engine bolt about 'pain'! I might have a few bruises, but that bolt! He's WELL beaten he is! I ground his nuts, stripped his threads, bashed his head, and cut it off. Lopped him in half and left him in the rust I did! THERE'S Pain! The Glory is ALL MINE!

Yeah... OK... but I can sort of understand why ancient warriors used to collect war-trophies from their vanquished foe! There is something rather primal about it.

Wear your battle scars with pride! Every one of them is a sign of a battle-field you have left with honour!

You're supposed to turn spanners towards the floor Mike, that way gravity and your body weight assist you. Each to their own I guess.

The last time I lubed my chain I asked the wife to steady the bike while I took it off the paddock stand.
I had the side stand down and of course she had her slipper clad foot underneath it during the process.
Luckily, I heard the scream before I let the bike off the paddock stand completely so the bike didn't topple over.
