Mine went down the exact same path after riding it through winter.
I took the swingarm off, attacked it with a wire brush in a drill to get rid of as much of the rust as I could. I then stuck 3 coats of primer on it and 3 coats of black (both rattle cans) and it looked a fairly decent job in the end.
This was it when I sold it (20k Miles on the clock)

One thing I will say of note, the spaces on the swingarm pivot are not the same length on each side, so make sure they go back on the right way or you'll never get the swingarm back on as I found out  ____________________ Current Bikes: ZX7r 97 (Black Beauty), VFR400 NC24 (The banana)
