Hi all, looking at getting a gsxr 600 but I am struggling to get insurance quotes to compare because of my age (23), on compare websites I only get about 4 prices, MCE have came out best but was wondering if anyone knows of any other company's that will give me a price to make sure I am getting the best deal?

I have read the insurance sticky thread so apologies if I have annoyed anyone with this thread, but someone on here may have had the same problem and maybe able to help, cheers.

Do you mean you're struggling to get insurance quotes because the price isn't reasonable, or they won't offer insurance. At 23 i'd be suprised if you're struggling to find people willing to insure you at all Shocked

Try
thebikeinsurer.co.uk
wickedquotes.com
and the usual comparethemarket/gocompare/moneysupermarket and whatever the other main generic comparison sites are now days.

What level of cover are you after - FC/TPFT etc, how many years riding/license and so on might be useful to add.

I'm struggling to get quotes because they won't offer insurance,

I have held a full motorcycle license for 23 months and have 1 years no claims,

I have been doing quotes for FC, a few of my older mates mostly have TPFT, but I don't think I would be comfortable with TPFT as the bike I am going to view is 5k,

The price I had of MCE was £700, which is a lot cheaper than other company's that have given me a price,

Do you think I would be wasting my time doing more quotes and that is the best price I am likely to get?

Thanks for your help.

I'm suprised you're having that many problems - are you in some terrible postcode for theft or anything weird Shocked I got my license at 21 and immediately got ZX6R [after 4 years riding on CBT admittedly] and had a ton of insurance offers - plenty were expensive - but there were lots of insurers willing.

MCE is who i've moved to this year [4th year on the ZX6] after 3 previously with Bikesure as they're cheaper. The excess is steep though at 600. First year i've personally been able to afford to go fully comp - I was TPFT the last 3 years and before on other bikes. You have to bare in mind if someone knocks you off and they're to blame etc theres a lot of chance you will ge a good compensation payout and so on - insurance going FC is more 'useful' if you make a big error - which if you ride with a bit of sense should be avoidable.

Even if you do have FC and make a claim - you firstly have to factor in excess, then the ACTUAL amount you get back, then the key point [which is something I didn't know about until last year and makes me glad I stayed TPFT rather than paying a ton more for fully comp the last few years] - your future premiums will be significantly raised, and after a few years of future insurance payments the additional cost each year may add upto close/equal/more than what you claim back initially anyway.

I only went fully comp this year as it was 150 TPFT vs 200 FC, so minimal difference.

Hmm interesting that you had no problems, NP13 so group D car insurance in cheap enough, not sure if the risk is different for a bike,

Due to it being a weekend most of the quotes I have done have been online, hopefully I will have more luck over the phone tomorrow,

I may try MCE on TPFT and see how much the price differs,

Thanks for your help all, not going to view the bike until Friday so after work in the week I will try my luck over the phone, will let you know how I get on.

Will you get have 2 years no claims in another month or so? If you do:

Run a pretend quote which shows you have been riding for 2 years and that you have 2 years no claims.

Unfortunately not, I had a bike for my first year of riding but haven't had one since.

Usually internet quotes are cheaper from my experience - I have found phoning ABOUT internet quotes rather than just proceeding to buy them online can save money though if you 'haggle' and tell a few stories about 'other cheaper insurers' and such on the phone.

They usually tell you their name at the start of the call but if they don't ask, and tell them you're recording the call for your records also - might discourage them from telling/selling you a load of lies to get a slice of commission - unlikely, but why risk it.

Thanks for the tips, the cheapest is with MCE at £700 and the other 4 quotes with prices are from £900 - £1300,

That's FC I can't edit to TPFT with MCE as it doesn't show up on the website just on the e mail I received from go compare, I then phoned MCE they had no record of the quote so done a new quote and the price was the same, will give them a call tomorrow and get a price for TPFT.

To give you some idea what I had to pay.

Fairly accurate;
3 years NCB/0 years license
[restricted but they never asked/knew] ZX6R 2005
Bikesure TPFT 800 - Excess 450

4 years NCB/1 years license
[restricted but they never asked/knew] ZX6R 2005
Bikesure TPFT 650 - Excess 450

5 years NCB/2 years license
[unrestricted now but they never asked/knew] ZX6R 2005
Bikesure TPFT 400 - Excess 450

6 years NCB/3 years license
ZX6R 2005
MCE FC 200 / TPFT 150 - Excess 600

Your prices don't sound that wild to be honest - its a sportbikes and your young and newly licensed - its going to hurt your pocket Thumbs Down Trying to get FC in my first few years was at its worst I think 1500.

That price sounds reasonable to me, I would get similar quotes on a newer bike. Just turned 25, I own an old Yamaha 94' FZR600r and it cost me £90 to insure it for the year (just renewed). I ran a few quotes last year for a GSXR-750 '04 (my next bike when I get da' ££), came back around £500 IIRC.

If you're confident you can keep a sensible head on at first go for it - as you say if you want and enjoy it; its worth the extra money. Buying a cheaper bike/selling/upgrading within a year or two when insurance gets cheaper might save you some money - but its a lot of hassle. If you're confident you won't end up writing it off, get the bike you want, go TPFT and in a couple of years it will be cheaper, FC-affordable, NCB protected and so on.

At the end of the day you've got a good chance of having a lot more to worry about than the bike in a lot of claim-situations anyway. If its low speed drop/accident damage you may well be better off trying to settle outside insurance because of excesses and loss of NCB. If its a serious crash and claim things are going to cost/lose you a lot of money in the longterm whether you're FC or not - if you're still around to claim that is Whistle insurance costs being a bit higher here and there isn't that important, its just part of the expense of getting into biking at the start for someone your age.

Got a quote of bike sure this morning over the phone, they was one of the company's that wouldn't quote me on the internet,

TPFT £450
FC £650

Happy with those prices as my mates around the age of 30 are paying a similar premium TPFT,

Thanks for your help Smile

You might get free breakdown with bikesure, not sure if they still offer it, worth an ask though, mention a rival insureres thrown it in to encourage them Razz

Where do you and your mates live?

I'm paying less than that now and I'm 25.

Check the list of insurers on the price comparison websites as some insurance companies don't offer quotes through them, might be worth phoning direct. I know that for cars Direct Line don't quote via meerkats or gocompare.

Live in Gwent South Wales,

Hard to compare prices to similar age as there are so many variables,

As with car insurance I have known people around the age of 30 pay more than me on the same model car (M3)

Have phoned around a few today and no one can beat the bike sure quote so that's what I am going to be going for.
