I see a few people every week with their hazard lights on when filtering, even in broad daylight when you can barely see the lights anyway.

Do you do this? Is it advisable to do so?

Just curious to be honest, I never have, but I can see why some would. Is it "legal"?

Well I remember reading somewhere that hazard lights should be used to warn other road users of traffic ahead, so maybe that's what they're doing?

Restrictions on the use of lamps other than those to which regulation 24 refers

27. No person shall use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road any vehicle on which any lamp, hazard warning signal device or warning beacon of a type specified in an item in column 2 of the Table below is used in a manner specified in that item in column 3.

5 Hazard warning signal device

Used other than–
(i) to warn persons using the road of a temporary obstruction when the vehicle is at rest; or

(ii) on a motorway or unrestricted dual-carriageway, to warn following drivers of a need to slow down due to a temporary obstruction ahead;

I imagine they'd have at best ritual significance when filtering. An audible warning would be better. I will find a cheap 12V ice cream jingle.

Some might wonder if using hazard lights while filtering suggests knowing you are doing something 'hazardous' .

It could be confusing. I wouldn't encourage overuse of anything like hazard lights, otherwise it's a "boy who cried Wolf" scenario.

Cue drivers passing biker with hazards on "bloody biker, riding with hazard lights on again, must be about to filter"

....Crash *collides with hazard*

I think it's a Parisian thing, as I've only seen it in Paris myself.

Not necessary at all and if other drivers can only see one side of your bike they might think you are indicating to move over which could prompt them to do something that puts you at greater risk.

Seen people do this, I don't see the point myself. Bikesafe rozzers said "No" sternly when it came up on the one I was on. That was as chatty as they got on that subject.

There's one nitwit who does it every morning filtering down to the Blackwall Tunnel. He goes slowly and constantly checks his mirror, so he can certainly see the queue of frustrated bikers behind him but never moves over to let anyone pass.

But surely using the 'Klingon cloaking device'* would render a bike invisible?

I've only ever seen this done on large tourers, usually with a beard sticking out under the open-face lid and lots of reflective tape on every panel of the bike. Waste of time.

Never had a bike with hazards. I just make sure my headlight's on and I'm using more revs than necessary Smile
