Good Drivers

Firstly I would like to say hello this being the first post and all. I'm currently riding a ybr 125 but the plan is to get the theory and das started end of may when some time free's up.
But to the point I've been riding daily since November and in that time have seen some shocking driving and more than enough near misses. However the last while I have found myself wanting to thank drivers who actually wait at give ways or use their indicators etc. So my question is does anyone else feel like this or is it a case of they should be doing anyway that so way thank them?

P.S I'm from the hatfield area so any tips on das courses/instructors near me would be appreciated.

I imagine 80% of bike riders are also car drivers, so this whole "cager" thing is a load of horse shit.

I tend to give a little side nod or hand out wave when people move over filtering sometimes. Never tend to thank anyone around junctions as i'm worried other drivers may misinterpret any nods and waves and pull out on me.

Generally I just treat everyone as a bad driver, more alert you are less likely the actual bad drivers will suprise you when you're off guard and theres plenty of them waiting to suprise you sadly

Filtering I agree with fully, and most cases I would give a quick nod to people who drive with care. As stated above it helps break the tension on the road. But the odd time I do think why should I thank someone for actually stopping at a roundabout. This is not just about cars but road users in general. Just wanted to see the general feel for this, but suppose in the end as long as you're safe its little odds really.

I do wonder sometimes if some drivers take a sideways nod as a 'get out the way/move over more' hopefully they get its to say thanks

Maybe I've been exceptionally lucky but I'm actually pleasantly surprised at the sheer number of drivers that move over for me. Not sure if they clock the Ls and decide they're not risking their wing mirror or if they're genuinely courteous?! I'm not complaining though.

I need to make sure this doesn't make me complacent because someone's bound to go against the grain sooner or later!

I've not been thanking people as I'm new to filtering and don't want to risk an unplanned dismount. I will do when I'm confident enough as I do appreciate it.

I nod or give a friendly wave when a car waits or let's me go, but if they're meant to then I don't. Find it a bit odd when cyclists wave for not pulling out in front of them, saying that it makes a change from being sworn at, although the other day it was deserved when I didn't see one and pulled out (low sun at a junction ).

I'll usually give drivers a little wave of acknowledgement if they give me a little room to get past in heavy traffic.

One time I was behind this Fiesta with a couple of hotties in it and the blonde driver pulled over to let me pass.
I waved as I passed and just managed to see her flash her headlights at me in return.
Anyway, I'd stopped at the next set of lights only to have the hotties pull up next to me and the driver wind her window down, pat me on the bum and ask for my phone number.

This may/may not have/could but really didn't and probably will never happen.

I'm completely with you on this, a little courtesy costs nothing.

Plus a little 'thank you' instantly placates anyone who might get their shirt up because you've just filtered all the way to the front of a queue.

I remember one occasion when I was driving down the motorway in my car, I checked my mirrors and did a shoulder check to make sure there was nothing there, moved over, looked in the rear view mirror and there was an angry guy on a bike braking heavily to avoid me, which he did!
I could only assume he had come flying onto the motorway at the previous junction, and seen a clear inside lane and carried on up there, on the M4 between 28 and 29 there's only about half a mile, but it took me completely by surprise, despite the fact I didn't really consider myself at fault I still apologised and he gave me a "apology accepted" wave as he went past me!

i'm from Stevenage. There is a place in St Albans Ive been looking at for DAS that offers 2hr lessons for £55, rather than doing full day courses. Depending on your skill level, it could work out cheaper... I'm hoping anyway.
