Sold my R6 not too long ago. Bought it for £3100. Sold it to a guy on eBay, who turned out to be a dealer. Nice guy mind. Anyway I knew the company he worked for so had a little nose on their website.
I sold my bike for £2,850 to him/dealer.
This is my very bike. Listed by the dealer. I feel sick.... :-/

You got you wanted for it, he will never get what he wants for it. Forget it, get on with life.

There's a dealer near me offering a bike identical to mine and the same vintage to the very month for £65 more than I paid new, three years ago. Whoever part-exchanged it in must be thinking, "WTF...?"

As someone who has paid the asking price twice, I'm compelled to agree with you.

dealers can offer warrenty and peace of mind that a private seller cant, alot of people prefer to buy from a dealer so as not to get stung by a bike with hidden issues.
even if some dealers are con artists

Looks overpriced. I wouldnt give it much thought. Okay he may get that eventually as hes a 'trusty dealer' when someone wanting a 'checked bike with warranty-x' comes along and pays more for something they could get identical for much less privately. By the time you sold it for that price as a private seller if you ever did you'd probably have to start renewing tax/mot/bike depreciated after years of overpriced attempts to sell it Laughing not worth the hassle.

Yes.

It's definitely better to buy from a dealer and spend an extra grand so when that £300 repair bill comes in, you don't have to pay it.

Just don't forget to buy an extended warranty...

You sold it for what you were comfortable selling it for. You received that cash. End of responsibility towards the bike.

What he has it advertised for is irrelevant. If you wanted more for it, you should have held out for it.

Further still, a buyer comes to you on a private sale and buys your bike and the engine lunches itself 1000 miles later = buyer's problem. Buyer buys same bike from your new seller and it lunches itself in same time-scale = sellers problem. Has to build at least a provision for that.

I'd say a bike at a dealer is worth £3/400 more than if it was private, not £1000

its what all dealers do an have always done he will have to cover his overheads, plan for any damage while bike is under some sort of warranty and then make his profit
when have you ever part exchanged or sold a vehicle to a dealer and they turn around and just chuck a few hundred on top and try resell?
the bike will be costing him money in shop space or garage space to store hell have probably thrown at least an hour on checking over the bike etc etc then there's the chance once sold the bike comes back in under the warranty that he needs to cover his ass on, id imagine there's some major costs he needs to recuperate and they probably wont come from 3-400 turnaround on a bike which will likely sit there for at least a month
as long as the op got what he wanted, as soon he found out it was a dealer he should have know the bike is going to be put back up for sale for more than he sold it for, don't let it bother you, its a business and you accepted his offer so got what you thought the bike was worth

Don't forget, he'll have to pay VAT out of that, too.

Not on the full sale price, and if he did, it would be reclaimed anyway most likely...

I'm failing to see the problem here. Dealers aren't charities, they are there to make a profit.

Having spent 8 years working as a used car controller at a franchised car dealer, I was in charge of preparing vehicles for sale. And I saw what little net profit per unit was left after all the bills were paid. Essentially, in that mark-up, the dealer has to spend a little preparing the bike (servicing, parts etc.). He has to give a warranty. He has to pay VAT on any profit. He has to pay his overheads (insurance, utilities, rates, mortgage/rent, wages, etc.). He also has to allow a bit of room to give the customer a deal. If he's lucky, he'll take £500 out of that.

Don't worry about it. You've got a pocket full of cash and a price you were happy with. That's all that matters.

this is normal.....if they are a good dealer then they will service it, MOT it, and stick 3 months warranty on it, and still get knocked down on the asking price, so yes they have to take all that into account when putting on the price tag, and of course still make a profit.

My purchase was a prime example - I knocked them down £300 off the asking price, they then serviced and mOTd it, and had to fit a new rear tyre. Then i took it back and they fitted a new starter relay (under warranty). Now I've taken it back again for a new throttle position sensor (again under warranty). So all in all, they've already "lost" £400 off that inflated asking price.

I sold my ZX10R to a dealer for £2,300 a few weeks back. I wanted £2,500 but he knocked me down on a few issues (cracked front mud guard) and a few scuffs, even threw in a Racefit Super Slash and all the extras.

He's put it up a £3,495, which after a few repairs, he will probably make a standard £1,000 on it.

What really would make you sick is if you gave a perfectly good Africa Twin that just needed the brakes servicing and a good clean to your newly passed test 17 year old nephew for free and he gets it stolen because the dick can't be arsed to lock it up properly because it is on his driveway. Then you realise that Africa Twins are sort after and hold their price, even for a bike that needs a bit of TLC.

Now that would make you sick............................. I fucking know.

See, there's your problem. You should have bought a much more expensive one from a dealer, then you could have over-valued it and had it still sitting in your garage unsold while you get to rant about eBay and Gumtree being full of TIME WASTERS and CHANCERS.

You did pretty damn good to get that much for it in a private sale, especially considering what it is.

Remember the dealer has business rates, has to provide warranty backup, pay a range of taxes on the profits, spend a lot more time with time wasters and tyre kickers... and still be able to "make a living" out of it.
