Hi,

I'm after an alarmed disc lock, that's secure, has an alarm that won't go off at random and upset my neighbours, and will still be usable after a year or two.

I realise that the local scrote could cut/smash the disc away to get the bike so it's more the deterrent and alarm side of the lock that I'm after. I don't want a standard bike alarm as they're crap.

Cheers.

My main one atm is a generic ebay cheapy, has done the job for a couple of years. Sure the batteries go eventually and suspect on this arent easily if at all replaceable but it was 10-15 quid so not overly fussed.

Not sure about which of the more expensive ones are deemed most reliable. As you say the point more to be an audible deterant than something expensive and hard to chop off after being disturbed, so i've never bothered to pay much, so long as it would trigger when it was cut/knocked.

My Xena one was great. Depending on where you put it on the disc depended on how sensitive it was. Sadly I dropped it one day and the little plastic bit that holds the alarm in place broked so now it is just a disc lock.

I haven't had much luck with them.
First ebay cheapo lasted a week and wouldn't work, have an oxford one that goes off every time it rains Evil or Very Mad

Oxford boss disc alarm padlock is fantastic.
Sensitive enough that if it's disturbed it will go off, but not sensitive enough to go off in slight winds, that set off my bike alarm.

Ain't I right, Matt? Thumbs Up

S'true, is a good alarmed lock the oxford boss - went off at the slightest touch but not once in high winds.

Cant say the same for your bike alarm after it screeching outside tents for ages Laughing

I have something similar to this and it works great. (not so great when you forget it's on then set off, drop the bike then the alarm goes off to add more embarrassment Embarassed ) but yes, i recommend!

I've had both Oxford Boss and one of the Xena disc locks.

Both became ultra-sensitive after a few months of commuting, rattling around as I did jumps off speed bumps etc.

If you ride with more care, either would do.

The Xena had a higher build quality and was smaller too. Oxford Boss had a big jacket of useless yellow plastic, made it look and feel cheap.

Oh, and the Oxford Boss never actually fit in any of the discs on any of my bikes, there was always something in the way. Was usually used as an alarm deterrent. Once it could no longer be trusted alone on the bike without going off 20 seconds later, I stopped using it. (It can be attached without the alarm being enabled by turning around the U bit, but since it didn't secure anything...)

Had 2 Oxford Screamer disc locks, both have now broken after a little over a year (and 6 months of that whilst I was out the country they were locked without the alarm set)

Both broke in identical fashion... no sign it was on its way out, no visible damage or anything, one day you just locked it, and the alarm would activate instantly but in a blatantly broken way... just continuous noise, but not as loud as when the alarm went off normally. Ended up taking them apart and removing the batteries so now they're just disc locks.

Considering a Xena one, but debating whether it's worth it, considering the rest of the security I have already.

Thanks for the info, from reading here and around the 'net there's no consensus on disc locks like there is with Almax/Pragmasis chains.

Oh well, I'll just get a non-alarmed brightly coloured thing to put of the local kids.

I'd get something like this. Worst case just remove the batteries if the alarms no good. Will pay as much for a non alarmed one anyway and almost pointless putting it on if youve already got a chain and its not alarmed.

I had one that looks very similar to that one before, it no longer locks.

I have a Xena and I've never noticed it being over sensitive really. The battery life could be better but overall I'm pretty happy with it.

I've got a xena xx6. Broke after a week of being used, little plastic catch holding the alarm unit in place snapped. Although it sometimes didn't go off continuously when on the bike, it did keep going off in my top box Evil or Very Mad

I've used an Oxford alarmed disc lock for nearly 2 years now, and haven't had a single problem with it* (haven't even changed batteries yet). If set properly, it doesn't go off randomly.

I commute on bike all year round, and have ridden through all the types of weather that the UK has offered during that time whilst using the lock, and it has not failed yet.

Highly recommended!

*I dropped it once and it stopped working, opened it up, took batteries out, put them back in and it was fine.

I got the Xena XZZ6 as a Ride subscription offer thing last year.
Gets a Thumbs Up from me. As said above, you can change the sensitivity depending upon where on the disk you put it(6 oclock for least sensitive, 12 for most sensitive) The yellow paint coating can chip off it a bit if you are rough with it, but they do a stainless steel version too which I suppose will keep it looking nicer for longer. For under £30 it's a pretty good lock.

I use one of these on my shed and they are good if they're not exposed to the rain.
My first one buggered up after a wet spell last year so now my new one sits under a waterproof flap.

My oxford screamer no longer screams but it will do until I get something else.

Advantage with a named disk lock rather than ebay cheapo is you can tell your insurance you have it. No idea how much actual difference it makes but my view is every little helps lol,.

Suprisingly, often none Thumbs Down

I believe a few members on here even had raised premiums declaring security Shocked although that may be perculiar exceptions. Most of the ones recognised on insurance lists in either case will likely cost more than the insurance reduction.

You probably will get a better disc lock in most cases though to be fair. Although a spray of oil onto the cheapies once in a while keeps them alive a bit longer.

Make sure it is a modern Xena alarm, this is what happened with my older one. https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=234732&highlight=xena
