Hi all! Well I used to ride a 125 when I was 18-19 and then got a car, now at the age of 26 I have just re booked my CBT and Direct Access and if all goes well Instructor said I could be on the road end of May! Have no kit just ordered some Sparda gloves and looking at some Alpinestar jacket and trousers. Maybe Spara boots and Caberg? helmet just for CBT and Test and to get me started. Basically just going to ask a hell of a lot of questions as time goes on. I was looking at getting a 600 IF I pass but a guy at Honda was trying to flog me a CBR500R. Done an insure quote and the 600RR came in at 1500 :O and the 500RR came in at 500 both fully comp does that sound about right? ( both quotes from Benetts? )

Thank you Smile

Hello Thumbs Up

Between the two bikes comes in as simple as what do you really want from a bike? The comparative costs are one thing but if you want an RR because it's a race rep, looks cool and to hell with the insurance costs, servicing costs, and the costs when you drop it then so be it...

The 500 is basically an A2 compliant attempt at a semi practical every day bike with an edge towards sportiness - and not a bad shout at it in most respects. But since you're buying new, you've got to think about what you're likely to want in 6 months time having experienced 40 ish BHP in a 200kg frame. If you're the type of guy that's going to want 150bhp in a 180kg frame then buying a new CBR500 wouldn't be a sane person's recommendation. Second hand??

Insurance wise - probably sounds about right but so many variables it'll be extremely difficult to tell. Use www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk and see how you get on.

it seems you can pick up a 500R for about 3500 second hand low mileage, yea i would love at GSXR750 or an R6 etc I just like 'supersport bikes' always have always will but maybe the 500 to rack up a few NCB, but i am open to advice Smile

So first things first then - what do you want the bike for? If it has to meet some specific requirements then what are they?

If it's just for fun - what can you afford? As in everything; to buy outright, for insurance, for when it needs servicing, for when it needs fuel, when you drop it.....

Most people love sports bikes but there's only the oddballs (Paddy I'm looking at you here) that would take an extreme ergo sports bike on a touring holiday, for example.

KTM Duke 390? Laughing

You're going to get a whole range of comments from the "start off small and cheap as you may well drop it while gaining experience" to the "get what your heart tells you because you can be careful and the throttle controls the speed, not the bike".

Both may be true Smile But its you who will know which fits you.

If you are buying new, then probably keeping for a while. So it might be better to go for something you really want and can grow into.
40bhp in 200kg is more likely to get old much more quickly than 100bhp and 190kg

My "plan" was to get a 3 year old CBR600F. It looked the part, was dealer serviced until recently, had a fair whack of depreciation already taken off and the insurance was better than the RR. With definitely enough bhp to keep things interesting for some time. And if you do sell to get that GSX-R750, you won't take a massive hit in money terms on the CBR and you've got some experience and NCD.

The 2011-2014 CBR600F drops right between those two bikes and might be the best all round option. 100bhp and the very capable Hornet chassis with respectable looks and, if you look around, there are plenty of 2nd hand models kitted out with huggers, undertrays and Akrapovich exhausts as they were dealer specials at the time.

Why?

Looks? CBR500R, Ninja 250/300 (although they're asking daft money) or a GSX650F tick that box.

Track days? CBR600RR or equivalent.

Road use? A CBR600F will be limited by you and the road.

Have you taken a 600cc+ inline 4 bike and wound it up to full whack?

Always pick a in-line four over a twin. Thumbs Up
