PostPosted: 14:53 - 15 Apr 2014    Post subject: Mod 2 tips? Reply with quote

I managed to pass my mod 1 the other week with no rider faults. Now just mod 2 and the insurance stand in my way for riding a bigger bike.

Although I did well on the mod 1 which was piss easy anyway, I can't help but feel I'm going to fuck up on my mod 2. I know it's no big deal and can retake but would like to keep things at cheap as possible.

I've read things on BCF and else where were examiners fail people for stupid things that are caused by other people. Even mates who have taken car tests have been failed because they've had to do something deemed not safe because of another road user.

It's also things like in terms of filtering. Apparently if the opportunity arises and it's safe to do so then you should filter otherwise I can't remember if it's a minor fault or a fail. My idea of safe or dangerous may differ to that of the examiner. Also If I'm on a Er-5 for example and he's on a pan then what's safe for me to filter down won't be safe for him.

Anyone got any tips or examples of when they've failed on there mod 2 so hopefully I'm aware of most possible mistakes and avoid them like the plague?

Don't think about what he's riding, you ride as though you're alone.

I found it a lot easier than a car test, the whole thing was more relaxed. It's like they're just going through the motions because they have to and they already know you can ride.

Don't crash, don't kill any kittens and do offer your examiner a pub lunch.

Don't forget, the test starts as soon as you walk out of the test centre doors.

When I did my first test, I got kitted up, got on the bike, went about 2 meters before realising the earpiece was caught up in my jacket and would be pulled out. So I stopped the bike (still in the test centre car park) removed my lid and sorted it out.

The test then continued, went really well. No minor faults Thumbs Up

Imagine my surprise when we get back to the test centre and the bastard tells me I've failed as I stopped the bike in the middle of the car park and he deemed it "an unsafe place to leave the vehicle, I should have pulled into a bay"... Evil or Very Mad

An otherwise flawless test failed before I'd even left the car park Laughing

also make sure your gear is up to it. I had a bomber style jacket and jeans on for my test and there was a little bit of my back showing - that's a fail if you get an anal examiner!

mine was kind enough to let me off, and 1 minor after that Smile

but yeah make sure you're not showing ANY skin at all, and just relax, you wouldn't have been put in for it if they thought you'd fail so it's obvious you CAN do it

Not filtering is not a minor. So DO NOT FILTER. If you do you just open up hundreds of other possibilities to be marked down, much more sensible to simply sit in traffic you can't get marked down for doing that unless you are a total window licker and stall pulling off or something equally stupid.

Also you won't fail for a drivers stupid actions you will fail if you react stupidly to their stupid actions.

In short don't filter and don't be stupid. I know the second may be hard for you but you only have to pull it off for 45 minutes tops.

Relax.

When you come out he'll ask you one or two questions then after you'll get on your bike. Take a moment and relax. Take a couple of breaths before you let him know you are ready and just take it easy. Don't filter - you are not obliged too and just take it steady. Make sure you don't dither of course, get up to speed but enjoy the ride.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies.

Just booked my test for next Wednesday 23rd April. Got a lesson tomorrow and Tuesday. One thing I am concerned about the most is the bike. It's a typical training bike that is just shit in every way. Can't see fuck all out of the mirrors (one is round the other rectangular), front left indicator lens held on by duct tape and the switch box for the indicators are tilted way to high up.

Not to mention the ER-5 doesn't feel physically much bigger than my CBF just with more power. It's so difficult just to relax on it and enjoy the ride especailly with a stupid ear piece in which hardly works so I hope the DSA use separate ones to that of the training school.

Fucking hell. Reminds me of my first Mod 2 a bit - got 50 yards down the road - "Pull over in a safe place please." Wtf. Pulled over. Examiner tells me the side stand is half down on the school CBF600. Well okay, I think - bike's shit, should've cut out on me not let me drive off with its stand not completely up. But I wasn't really thinking about that at that particular point. I just wanted to get underway again. Which I eventually did.

Rest of the test went well apart from a couple of minors. But of course, I'd failed because he'd made me pull over.

Lots of this!

I'm fairly certain that riding past a turning with an indicator on is inst-fail.

Each time you see a turning approaching that your not planning to take, press the cancel button! Better safe than sorry.

Indicators, use them and cancel them, I was told to cancel for every up change to make sure you do them.
Lifesavers when turning right or exiting a roundabout. Consider when turning left, do one if there is a cycle lane.
Shoulder check when changing position on the road or lanes merging.
If safe to do so, get up to the speed limit.

Don't worry about or mimic the examiners road position, he'll be moving all over to see what you are up to.

Mirror check when you are going to do something, or need to consider doing something, like approaching a light that has been green for a while so may change.

If you make a mistake, try not to let it ruin the ride, it might not be as bad as you think, or he may have missed it.

If you fail, no big deal, just book another. I found it better to tell as few as possible about the test booking, less pressure.

TLDR; Good luck, take it easy and relax.

Had my first mod 2 lesson today. Didn't do too badly apparently just not to rush things apparently I accelerate too quick away from junctions, may be the because I'm used to having to twist the throttle far to get the bike to 30 as quick as possible, where as on a 500 you don't need too :/

The radio the training instructor uses is absolutely shit, on approach to a big roundabout with 3 lanes she said "follow signs for rjha;wkfhljk" I was like what? She didn't even say it twice I'm pretty sure they're suppose to. I just turned left and headed back into town.

Another thing she did which pissed me off is, we were riding down the A14 where at the moment road works are going on so it's a 40 limit. I was behind a lorry and just as we get on top of a junction she said "We're exiting at the next exit" I presumed the next one along seeing as we are right on top of this one. Then she said "So you need to be indicating left" I just carried on else otherwise the time I've done a life saver I would hit the verge bit if I tried moving to the left then.

I just hope the DSA radios work a lot better than the shit ones the training school uses. I also realized that the ER-5 is not very comfortable. Not sure if they're like that in general or just that heap of shit the school uses. I got on it and it felt just as small as my CBF 125. Hate not being able to see shit out of the mirrors no matter how you position them (and I thought the CBF ones were bad) and also the rear brake seems to have no effect what so ever. The brake pedal feels solid soon after applying pressure to it but the brake doesn't seem to want to slow the bike down. I got back on the CBF 125 afterwards and despite it being small and the seat being hard it felt a lot better riding position and just more comfortable than the ER-5. Pity my Bandit 600 isn't restricted, I find that more comfortable than the ER-5.

Apparently also, she didn't mention it today but when I did my mod 1 lesson we did country road riding on the way back and I managed to leave her through the bends (whilst keeping to the limit). Not being able to see her in my mirrors, I presumed she was keeping up. Sad I need to make sure the examiner stays with me as much as possible and I'm thinking how? If I can't see him?

Just hope that it'll be fine on the day and I pass it first time. I'm expecting a few rider faults I doubt I'd do a flawless ride. Just as long as I pass it, I'm getting impatient now to get on the Bandit.

My advice - Make sure you don't miss speed limit signs. One of my minors was for doing 25 in a 20, as I wasn't sure, and the other was for doing 25 in the 30, as again I wasn't sure.

My test centre had different a communication device to my instructor and it worked fine. He said before if we get lost he'll ask me to pull over. You ride as if you were out on the roads normally, he'll keep up with you, you don't have to make allowances for him/her.

You can't fail for not doing what you're told. As long as you don't fuck up what you actually do.

If you miss a direction from them, no bother. Just keep going, don't worry about it and they'll give you a new one.

Panicking and suddenly taking an exit is bad. Sailing merrily by and waiting for them to tell you to get off at the next one is fine.

Although, if you keep ignoring them, they may pull you over to find out what's going wrong, but they still can't fail you for it!

Some common Q&As from my riding school (though always listen to your own instructor as they will probably know what the examiner likes/expects more so than someone in a different county)>

Don't filter ever.

DO go where the examiner tells you - one "oops, missed it" is ok but if you keep doing it they can fail you for not following instructions properly.

If the radio fucks up, just pull over when safe (indicating etc as normal) and hold your hand up and wait for him/her to come over.

If you can't see them in your mirrors, they will catch up eventually but give them a good chance by not hugging 60 all the time - they may be held up and if too far then the radio will go out of range.

Traffic - my test didn't go through heavy traffic at all, they don't want to waste good testing time stuck in a queue, so don't worry about waiting or filtering (see above). But if you are in a queue, don't wait too close to the car in front (something I kept doing in training!).

So, just ride and remember what you have been taught, and you'll soon be waving a cert in the air wondering what you were worried about.

By the way what things shouldn't you do on your test besides speeding and disobeying road signs/rules?

On my lesson a car was stopped waiting to turn right. If I wasn't on my lesson I'd go past on the inside. I'm sure the highway code allows this but wasn't too sure when it came to doing it on the lesson although I ended up doing it anyway.

Another thing I did which I wasn't too sure of was she got me to turn right at a box junction and made the point that you have to sit on the box junction and go when clear unless the exit is blocked then don't enter the junction. The exit wasn't blocked when the lights changed to green so I moved onto the box. But traffic soon blocked the exit as there's traffic turning left onto that road coming from the other way. I thought great now what? I just thought fuck it and when it was clear I performed a life saver and turned right and just filtered past a few of the cars. I don't think she was expecting me to do that but didn't seem overly bothered by it. Is that allowed on the test?

Also I was told that when passing a parked car you should be a door width away. Fair enough makes sense although normally I'd go in-between parked cars and on coming traffic. Anyway I come up to a parked car on my lesson with a car coming the other way and it was too small of a gap to get a door width away so I slowed down but didn't completely stop and the instructor said "you can get through that" I was thinking yeah but it ain't a door width gap. I went through anyway but she moaned at me the first ever lesson I had for doing that well not moaned just mentioned I was too close to the parked cars.

I'm also concerned whether different examiners/instructors have different opinions on things. Like you know when you get a road that bends round to the left or right and there's a junction on bend. I normally don't indicate as to me it's a continuing road. But watching a video on Youtube of a guy who's an instructor said to indicate as you're suppose to indicate when turning or moving to the left or right. But then I was thinking would my instructor agree or not and further more what does the test examiner reckon?

Read your other sheet that you got with your Mod1, watch your spacing on the road. If you go the wrong way don't panic just make sure you follow the rules of the road ride safely. Don't filter it just opens up more problems. Also make sure every time you move off you do visible shoulder checks (actually move your head).

No I haven't done Mod2 but these are some of the tips I've been given.

You have the farcical and potentially harder test out of the way. Mod 2 is just a ride through town with a Sat Nat in your ear.

Just relax and take it easy. Get up to speed limits quickly, don't mess about dithering because its a test.

REMEMBER: Street lights = 30 mph. No street lights = NSL (Unless otherwise signed)

Be prepared, you will invariable get taken through a 20 limit to see your keeping your eye open.

Ride for you and you only - for instance don't worry about waiting for a gap in traffic big enough for 2 bikes, the examiner will catch up if you get separated.

The questions he asks you before the test are common sense, don't lose sleep.

Wear the right gear - don't get knocked back for not being suitably dressed. If you need glasses, wear them. Some idiot on here posted about trying to get away without a few months ago for his test.

Don't filter, time wasted in traffic is time you are not being faulted for something, same goes for riding around speed bumps, just slow down and go over.

Remember the nodding dog mirror checks and lifesavers and CANCEL YOUR INDICATORS!!

Best of luck Thumbs Up

REAR OBSERVATION - look behind you. Hold look behind you long enough for it to be seen.
SHOULDER CHECK - during a manouver, to check for development of situation.

OBSERVATION = BEFORE
CHECK = DURING
a 'manouver'.

Make them clear, so they aren't confused with a sloppy mirror glance; and remember, bloke following you, when YOU need to look behind, so will he, so make them deliberate, dont rush them, so he has good chance to see them... he could be looking t'other way himself.

Best thing to do is stop caring if you pass or fail. Rock up do it go home. You either go home with a licence or go home and book another day. So what if you don't pass. Don't tell everyone and their dog your doing it either, its just more eyes looking over your shoulder. Don't think of it as a test its only an assesment. Few people do it more than a couple of times so odds are you will have your licence by the middle of summer at the latest.

So to recap.

Its not a test
Don't tell anyone your doing it
And also it takes less time and is cheaper than a trip round the supermarket.

On my lessons especially my first one, being allowed on a 500cc bike was like "oh yeah more power Twisted Evil" As soon as I come passed national speed limit signs it's wack the throttle open a shoot up to 60/70 depending on single or dual carriageway. I also like to get a move on round town and get to 30 fairly quickly. Instructor reckons I'm rushing things pulling out of junctions to quickly even though I just like to get a move on. Apparently I get to 35 and slow it down but I've always backed off so that I get to 30.

Also irritating how she says things I already know like when approaching a nsl sign she says "When you reach the signs, mirror checks and away you go" and I'm like "yes I fucking know -.-".
