Sister is turning 16 so we want her to get some road experience before she gets a car at 17 she isn't interested in pursuing bikes after 17 (at the moment) so gonna buy her a 50 to use for a while.

She can ride she has ridden my 125 a few times and handles it well and a 110 thumper (Private land ofc)

What 50ccs do all the kids like at the moment Thumbs Up

Has anyone ever really liked a 50, since they became restricted?

Anyway, it's going to be something scooter shaped, does anyone of note actually make a proper 50cc bike now, with gears and everything?

Derbi Gpr 50
Aprilla RS50
Yamaha TZR 50

She prefers gears but she isn't getting a car til she has been on a bike for about a year so she knows to look for them and gets a sense of speed something my family has all done

Srsly though, would you sent her out onto a UK road on a 28mph moped? That which does not kill us makes us stronger... unless it mashes us up.

I'd be looking at a supermoto, purely on the basis that bigger = visible = better

Aprilia SX50, Lexmoto LSM50 or similar?

ha

As for the 28 Mph limit, she would only be riding it around town really its only to get her used to the road before she gets in a car so she isn't a smidsy waiting to happen, I personally would be a kitten killer and derestrict it but whether she would or not no one knows.

I had an old early 80's DT50MX that was actually a fun little bike to ride, would do an indicated 40mph or so.

A few years back I rode a mates Aprillia SR50 scoot to the MOT station for her about 12 miles away on B roads. Was surprisingly fast for and didn't feel that much slower than what I'd ride my normal bike (GS400 import) at the time.

A lad at work had a Rieju RS2 50cc which was reasonably sprightly and looked good for what it was. When he turned 17 it grew an 80cc head and went as well as a CG or similar for a relatively cheap amount of cash.

But way too expensive she would be better off taking my GPR 125 when she is 17 lol

Might put an offer on this

Easy to ride. Cool enough for school!

My mate has a Yamaha TZR 50, it'll do 55 derestricted. But all the AM6 engines will, rs 50, senda 50. My MT5 used to do 50, according to a mates speedo, and I'll thump anyone who disagrees.

There was a girl at school with a little Piaggio, that flew. Some mopeds are fairly nippy. A lad on an RS80 blew me away on my varadero. Granted, not strictly a ped.

I like peds Embarassed

any geared bike you can't really go wrong, they all tend to be the same. the derbi engines tend to be a bit stronger and reliable than the am6 minarelli, so that means Derbi senda/Gilera RCR, Derbi GPR.. I would also however look for a model that is restricted, usually low mile examples.. then you know it won't have been fucked around with, less chance of going wrong.

Just avoid the chinky geared's like the plague.. a friend of mine went through I think it was 3 pistons in the space of about 8 months, and various other things.. spent more time in the garage then it did on the road.

I've always fancied a Honda XR8S as a decent enough 50cc, in that:
a) It has a funky cast alloy frame
b) It's a Jap designed and Japanese built 50cc, and due to it's design and materials it cannot have been a cheap 50cc bike to make, which I think bodes well years down the line.
c) It's a got a simple but tunable 50cc 45-50mph motor, that's all you need from a 50cc machine.

you need to be careful with the cub 50s as the early ones aren't legally classified as a "moped" as they aren't restricted to 28mph... cant remember the exact differences but there is a thread about it on the C90 club forum
