Apologies for the stupid thread, but I thought i'd ask anyway.

It's not for me, but the GF's step dad. He has a GSXR 750 at the moment, a K8 I think. He uses it for weekend rides, and commuting in the nicer weather. He only got back into biking a year or so ago when I started bringing big bikes round his way. He used to have an old R1 and absolutely loved it, and he is looking at getting another. He has been visiting Yamaha dealers and poking around 2014 R1s for a while, trying to test ride one at the local dealer. He is still waiting for a demo unit to come in.

However, he has seen a GSXR 1000 for sale locally, a '13 plate, and was asking my opinion of the two. Being second hand the GSXR offers many thousands of pounds of savings, but let's just say he doesn't really need the money. So I'd say take that out of the equation for the purposes of this. He is the kind of guy who'd want the best bike rather than the extra cash. Obviously this money will make a difference when it comes down to it, but it's whether it would make enough of a difference to sway his decision away from what he had his heart set on.

Is there anyone here that owns a new R1 and can comment on what it is like to live with? Service intervals, costs, known problems etc. Alternatively is there any reason why the GSXR would be the better choice?

So which is better please k thnx.

I can't comment on the GSXR1000, as I've never owned one. I do however, have a brand new R1, for about a week now.

Just done 600 miles and had the first service done for free. I believe there's a big (ish) one at 12,000 miles too, couple hundred quid and the valves at 24,000 being the biggest one but I doubt I will still have it by then. You get a 2 year manufacturers warranty with it and I got a years RAC breakdown as well (not that I should need it).

First impressions, coming from a 2004 ZX10R, is that it's very quick but also very refined.

Compared to the raw power of the ZX10R, it feels quite tame and very planted. The traction control system, A, B and Standard modes don't seem to make that much of a difference to me. I don't feel the bike behaving in a radically different way on any of the modes to be honest, nor the TC.

Out of 10, I would rate it a solid 9. Only downside to it in my experience, is that it seems to drink juice but the dash shows 30mpg average.

The cross plane makes a tremendous sound on its own with the standard cans but a little too quiet for my liking. Stick a set of after market cans on there and the sound will match the looks of it better.

I've thrashed it a couple of times and it's an animal when you open it up, loads of grunt low down and sings high up. Loving it so far, totally different ride to the ZX10R but in a good way.

I reckon the K8 750 is the best bike out of those choices tbh. If he's already got one then all the 1000 is doing is giving him bragging rights.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Thanks for the info. One of the reasons he wants the R1 is for the noise, although I doubt he'll put after market cans on there to be honest.

Does it feel as fast as the ZX10? He is definitely after something that can scare the crap out of him every now and then, so not sure how the cross plane behaves when it comes to high revs and pinning it...

Perhaps he wants bragging rights. All I know is that he has always wanted another R1, and is in the fortunate position to be able to spunk many thousands on a weekend toy.

It doesn't feel as fast as the ZX but I keep saying to people, imagine doing a 100mph in a Bentley or Veyron, that feeling of not going as fast as you are is present. I think it's because of all the fancy electronic wizzardry and engine advances, coming from a 10year old ZX to a brand new R1, just totally different.

It definitely sounds the business when you open it up but also that low down grunty noise when you're bumbling about at 30/40mph.

if he had a 98-01 carb R1 he is best going back to it!!

I had a carb R1 last year sold it to get a 04 R1 then sold that to get an 07 R1 and now i have gone back to the carb 00 R1 and am staying put!

i dont know about the big bang but the 04-08 R1 torque is all above 6krpm which is no use to me but the 00 R1 torque is from tick over!

the gsxr 1000's have imense torque even when stationary with the engine removed....seriously fast bikes with torque everywhere!

Biased GSXR1000, mine was a K3 mind, but still a beauty and beast of a bike.

I believe he had a 98 R1 before. However he wants new, or newish, and loves the noise of the Big Bang engine. I've told him to go test ride them both, as well as the kawasaki and bmw options for comparison.

I've owned both and now have a new R1.
I can't really say much more than what R1 Jay has said, the engine is awesome plus the sound it makes is major bonus points, power delivery is very linear with tons of torque from low down the revs and it pulls pretty hard.

I've already got a set of Akra's on the bike, the noise is intoxicating and very addictive.
The rest of the shopping list is De-Cat Pipe (for more noise of course) Flashtune and Quickshifter.

Before I got the R1 I did look at a new GSXR 1000 as well but for me the bike has not had any real development for the past 9 years, its very bland and offers nothing compared to the rest of the 1000cc bikes out there.

The S1000RR is a bag of shit, you'd do well to steer him away from it. build quality and durability issues galore. Fuel tank corrosion, Sump corrosion, chocolate gearboxes, dodgy quickshifter, electrical problems here, there and everywhere.

You can't argue with an 18 (?) year track record for the R1.

Same as UrbanRacer, shopping list is:

Dynojet Quickshifter
Dynojet Power Commander 5
Flashed ECU
De-cat Y-pipes (I did order some but they didn't come with my order, as he forgot to put them in. New one on the way now though).

Got a tail tidy too but it's the wrong one, just going to get an R&G or something instead.

Enjoying the Toce Exhausts at the moment, they're ferociously loud and look the dogs danglies.

*Update*

Just thought i'd update this. Deposit has been put down on a new R1, and he should be collecting shortly. These words also exited his mouth when he told me: 'I suppose you'll be wanting a go won't you.' Mr. Green

Think carefully before you take him up on that because, if you're anything like me, you'll end up wanting (and eventually buying) one yourself. Wink

Absolutely no way in hell I could afford a bike nicer than my current, especially a new R1!
