Bike suggestions

Hi all,

Another boring, 'what bike shall I get?' thread, but I would be grateful for any advice.

So I recently passed my theory and did a CBT, with a view to getting a full license in time for mid-summer. Unfortunately, I don't turn 24 until the autumn, so I've decided to get a 125 on L-plates to at least get me on the road, until I turn 24 and then I'll only have to do the tests once. I'm a driver and have a car for daily use so will only use the bike for fun and for practice.

Deciding on a type of bike is proving the hard bit. I owned a 125 years ago (Honda cg125), which was painfully slow, and pretty bombproof, but was dreadfully boring. I'm trying to decide between an enduro/ trail bike which wouldn't be much fun on the road, but atleast I'd be able to do a few greenlanes, or a race replica,
I don't want to spend any more than about 1500 quid, but finding decent trailbikes less than 20 years old that are road legal are few and far between, and although race replicas like rs125s are pretty plentiful, almost all of them below 1500 quid have been written off at some stage, and/ or are owned by 17 year olds who will have never given them the stringent servicing they require. (By the way, I'm relatively handy with a set of spanners, so regular servicing of a 2 stroke 125 is fine by me).

The rs 125 is my choice so far, because it's fast enough for me not to be stuck at 50mph holding traffic up, and although it sounds like a moped it looks pretty nice.

I've seen a Honda NSR (1990) advertised locally for less than half my budget.

It looks too old to be cool, and not old enough to be classic, but it's a sports styled 125, close by, within budget. I believe it's 4 stroke?

It also looks well cared for, so I'm in two minds whether to make an offer?

Would you dare, or should I hold on for a bike I won't be as embarrassed to be seen on?

Its a 2-stroke. I know you said you had a CG, and I share your pain having ridden an XR for a year, but if its just a few months surely you can put up with another 4-stroke?

Maybe something closer to the legal limit, such as an R125 (if you really want the sports style). DT125 is the only 2-stroke I'd personally consider, although NSR's are meant to good, I'm not sure I'd want one that's 24 yrs old
