Update on page 3: Been carrying on with the sidecar racing again this year with a permanent team now. We competed in the South-East Championships yesterday, although we didn't get a very good result in the end as our suspension packed up before the final race Brick Wall. A friend who does photography came along with me to this one, so I got quite a few decent pictures of the days events I thought i'd share.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Tried something a little different today - sidecar racing with Team Penfold at Grafty Green in Kent. Nil off-road experience, Nil grass-track experience, Nil side-car experience - Thought I might as well get on with it all at once Laughing

No video of me riding just yet, as Paddy and Ian who kindly came along to support and record it arrived after the practice/first race, and my later two were cancelled because of the bike having issues, but i've ordered the official video of the event so i'll upload that when I get it next week.

Really enjoyed it, although the first time i've been genuienely frightened by something Shocked many brown-pants moments at the start.

I was riding sidecar on this

This was transformed Laughing

Big Karma to Paddy for kindly hosting me for the weekend [and letting me play around on his KTM and Blackbird Twisted Evil]

Laughing Few pics, I took more but this is the best ones of the bunch.

Great day out really, enjoyed a different side of biking and meeting a stand up guy, great weekend!

What really irked me was the fact everyone seemed to run the most unreliable bikes. I ride shit, but some of these just spluttered and died. I know there are probably strict regulations they need to stick to, but is it really that hard to run a nice 600/1000cc lump in a frame? Laughing

Cheapy camera, hopefully I'll get a few models up in a month or two. Then you'll get more decent photos! I'll also get the GoPro sorted properly and find a way of getting decent quality video for you.

I'll ask him now Wink

Standing directly behind the gate is probably not the best thing, unless you like getting covered in mud Laughing

You're a brave man Matt, I had enough trouble with solos, you wouldn't get me hanging off one of those things Shocked

To be honest it was very tiring, i'm absolutly exhausted this evening [and severely sunburnt Mad]. It probably didn't help I barely ate before hand as I was nervous, but after running along with five blokes pushing the bike for 30 odd metres in full MX gear under the hot sun to get it started before each race, and then hopping on and hanging off for a few laps it became really physically draining, and quite mentally stressful as being aware my arms were on the verge of giving out when hitting large bumps was quite worrying

Ultimately though it was fun, everytime we came in I wanted to head back out after i'd had a bit of a sitdown. Unfortunantely it was first race of the season so the bikes were being very tempremental and needed lots of tweaking and fixing between runs. Hoping if I can make next weekend it will be a bit more full-on.

I think the max speeds are around 60mph, expect we hit somewhere in the mid 40's during the day as I wasn't confident enough on my positioning to get the bike upto top speeds so far.

I think I would draw the line at the lefthanders though, hanging on my arms with my ass out onto the floor is one thing - the right handers are perched lying over the riders seat with their face almost on the floor at times - that I am not in any hurry to have a try at

As an aside, can you find a copy of the regulations/specifications required for these? I cannot see anything stating what vehicles must/musn't have etc Laughing

Looks seriously fun Very Happy

I'm tempted to come down and watch next weekend if you will be there; although it will mean 400 miles of riding in 1 day, plus I think I am working so might not be able to anyway Sad

How did you manage to get into this anyway Matt?

Not sure, its quite a small sport though so most of the info probably isn't online in either case - maybe available if you contact the ACU directly or something.

They were scrutineering all the bikes very closely - we almost missed the first race because our rear mudflap was deemed to be too short, so we ended up cutting up a car-mat and bolting that onto the bottom minutes before going on track Laughing

If I am able to go - it was likely going to be from Bristol but I can probably shuffle things to be leaving from Bournemouth, so if you want to split fuel costs I can take us from Bournemouth if you want - you can leave your bike in my garage while we're in Kent.

Originally the racing club was planning an experience day just slowly taking people around a field on the sidecars, but that all fell through because of track problems/legal stuff I think. I kept in contact with the guys i'd been speaking to about that, and they said they were looking for someone to ride passenger if I was interested in doing it as more of a longterm thing, rather than just a have-a-go day. I said i'd be up for it whenever i'm able to get time off work, and that was that - got my grasstrack club membership, ACU license, and started racing Laughing

I'm hoping I'll be able to keep riding with the Penfolds as they've been national champions numerous times so its a great opportunity, but it depends how I get on really, if my riding isn't upto their level it may be I have to try join one of the other lower-ranked teams after a few more races. They have said they struggle to find people to ride with them though so for now at least I should get a chance at a fair few more races. No pressure Laughing
